Quite true until they do a 5.29 swap. That crawl ratio becomes pretty lusty.

I’ve popped my clutch, and driven without the gas peddle more than once with my taco. Even
never gets old… unbelievable how much air they caught. Think the airbags went off at landing?

I think there are aftermath pics somewhere on TW?

If the airbags didn't go off, you can be certain that brown pants were wished for.

I have a MT and a steep driveway out with no run-up. I know what you're talking about. If the RPMs get too low and you don't ride the clutch, it will just crawl or stall. Empty I am fine, as long as I start on the flat area. If I have a loaded dirt bike trailer I've been known to use 4 wheel low to crawl it.

This truck is geared way too tall.

Precisely! Most trouble I've had has been trying to reverse while in a sketchy predicaments off-roading. Also going slow and technical on the rocks is hard!!! Especially when you have to come to a complete stop at 35degrees uphill between 2 giant bolders

On another note getting a doubler box seems to be quite the pain in the rear for the 3rd gens....

There is a huge difference in ratios for first gear between a 4L and a 3.5, of .2 so that is not a factor. HP is greater in the 3.5 so that is not a factor either. I do 2 way radio work yes they do tend to put antennas on the highest things they can find and don't really care about "road" maintenance what there is of it, zero issues. Yes I use low range FWD it is pretty much is mandatory and have not broken any thing. Still have the original clutch even with pulling my camper.

While I agree 4hi requires too much clutch work when climbing over off-road obstacles, I'm very surprised we are talking about it in the context of a driveway. Can you not just keep it in 2hi and drive a little faster? Momentum can solve many problems.

Okay, but what are your 1st Gear torque limits? From the current set of maps that we have access to, I don't see any:
    upload_2021-8-27_14-55-11.jpg
That's from ECU ID 04751, which is the TSB tune for the 2011 V6 4WD MT.

Compared to the info that I posted in Post 6, the 3rd Gen is being kneecapped:
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/power-loss-on-hill-in-4h-manual-trans.734611/#post-26158897

I can tell you in my experience with climbs are similar to what you are describing. I can crawl ahead with similar results.

If @vroomvroom_19 is nearby, I'd edit his Stock tune just as a fun little experiment.

You can see the air bags deploy before he gets airborne.

The OP said in Post #12 that it only happened one single time if l understood it correctly so would it be a tune issue?

At the risk of insulting the OP, it sounds like a case of user error. Albeit, the MT is challenging to drive at super low speed with a load and a tune might help. I can admit to killing the engine quite a few times.

    Thanks!

I missed that one. Hard to say then.

I do know that folks have been pretty jazzes, including myself, with those limits gone.

true this is all speculative without being there to observe, but i can say this:

removing the limits as tonered has described, deleting the accumulator, and getting a full tune beyond just the limit removal has made consistently clear when I'm making the errors in throttle and/or clutch modulation. my driveway into work is a stupid steep grade. before working out these things i struggled daily getting up that grade. after doing the ADM and tuning i began to see where my mistakes were very consistently. it's tough when the tune limits and numbing accumulator stand between you and this small motor.

I have KDMax tune and have removed the accumulator. I agree with you that they have improved this situation greatly. No regrets. But, it can still be tough crawling up steep hills in 2wd without RPMs or slipping the clutch. Much different than my 2nd gen was.
