Consumer reports is an ok source but you need to take them with a grain of salt. Actually, many people here consider the 2017 model year to be the golden year for the 3rd gen. It is after the first model year but still doesn't have TSS and has the large cubby on the driver's side just to name a few things.

As for the shifting, that's just dependent on who you are. Some people are sensitive to it and others don't notice it at all. I'm in the latter camp. Occasionally I'll notice a hard shift but I tend to be under heavy load such as going 85 MPH and starting to go up a hill. But I commute 90 miles per day and I think it shifts fantastic.

The only issues I've had with my truck have been things that were either covered by warranty/recall (3rd brake light, for example) or things that have nothing to do with Toyota (cracked windshield from a rock chip).

If you can't tell I'm a little biased and love my 2017! The only thing I'd modify right now is maybe the front grille. I'd love to put a 2020 grille on there with my non-TSS Toyota emblem but I'd probably do that if I was more considering blacking out my truck.

I don't really read into that crap. I especially steer clear of the reddit. Keep loving your truck. Love it until you don't love it anymore.

Some of these folks - they got no idea... MotorTrend ranked the Ridgeline as #1 to buy in 2021...

    Per their report:... ROFL

Sure, you'll give up some ultimate towing to other trucks on this list, but the rest of the time,
you'll be enjoying a quieter, drive and loads of clever storage cubbies, including a wide bed and
a lockable in-bed trunk that doubles as a cooler.

Stirring in the '21 Ridgeline's new, butch looks only strengthens the current model's class-leading position.

I still think the ridgeline is one of the ugliest vehicles I’ve ever seen. I can’t stand those things.

How many 3rd gen Tacoma transmission failures have you read about? Personally, I’ve seen maybe 1 or 2 threads on here (and we don’t know how they were treated), and look how many Tacomas are out there. I’d be willing to bet Chevy truck tranny failures from 2016 and up compared to Toyota is 20:1.

Had mine since March of 17, had the tranny software update a few years back, no complaints. Too cheap to pay $300-400 for a tune.

Honda Ridgeline is the next big thing. Lots of 3rd gen owners need a new vehicle to transition to. Once the appeal of the Tacoma fades.

The other choice is that lifted Outback, that is reminiscent of a Cybertruck with out a bed.

The 4th gen is a few years out. How many people are trading their 3rd gens for another 3rd gen?

When I went in to the dealership to buy my Tacoma, I told the salesman that I was planning on buying a Ridgeline, to make it seem like I wasn’t very interested in the Taco. Told him I just wanted to test drive a Tacoma before I went back down the road to close the deal on a (non existent) ridgeline I’d picked out.

He looked at me like I was insane and i have to admit, it made me cringe just saying that stuff lol

    I have a 2017 & bought it with 7,200 miles
Had the differential replaced under warranty; the wining was getting louder by the week; the service tech found metal shavings so no questions; they replaced the differential.
    No gear searching.
I do have a "shutter" just around 1300 rpm up to 1600 rpm under a load; (almost like it is lugging Badly) really noticeable with the AC on, not as bad with the AC off; really noticeable when cold (first 10 or so minutes of driving) & while driving in traffic

truck has 36,xxx miles now, no other issues.
