A couple years ago I replaced my original tires on my 2009 tacoma with a set of Cooper Discoverer H/T (245/75R16) and I've never been happy with the road noise. I don't off-road with my truck and I tend to drive a fair amount of highways where the tire road noise is the worst. Anyone have a recommendation for tires that are fairly quiet? Not sure but I think my truck originally came with Dunlap AT20 (or at least thats what my spare is). Maybe I should go back to the Dunlaps?

(also if I decide to ditch the Cooper tires I might try to go with 17 inch rims. Would that change my tire options?)

For a quiet tire, you need to avoid the "terrain aggressive tread themed" tires.

Look for a P-metric tire with highway type tread pattern.

I'll be bold to suggest a set of Michelin Defender tires. These are quiet, long lasting, good traction in all weather conditions.

Im looking at new tires as well and possibly up-sizing to R17. The guy at Discount Tire said the 17" was the most common tire size for light trucks, but I havent tried to confirm that.

Even those dunlops are not a quiet tire. They are crap all around.

Any "H/T" tire should be good for you.

The king of quiet is michelin ltx but they are pricey.

I'd suggest yokohama h/t for a more cost effective quiet tire.

Michelin LTX are arguably the best highway tire you can get, but they're expensive. I stopped buying Coopers a while ago for the reasons you mentioned, they got loud as they aged and I couldn't get them to wear properly. I would absolutely not go back to the Dunflops, they are a terrible tire!

Michelin Defender LTX M/S!! Quiet ride and great wet weather traction. That's what I have. Good reviews as well.

Firestone Destination XT. Quiet, and the same weight as P rated tires if you get the LT215/85r16's. E rated. Personally, I also have some General Grabber 60 HT P ratrede tires and have been happy with them for city driving too. I think we get too caught up in trying to look tough with massive tirers that kill mileage and handling when the truck is driven on road most of the time. It's like wearing steel toed construction boots to work in an office.
