    More specific please.

Are you saying the front diff is the problem? Can't get it unlocked?

If you would include a location (city/state) there may be someone in the area who could assist, if assistance is needed.

Not really 'technical chat', you'd get more attention the 1st gen forum.

If you take the cv completely out your wheel will fall off. But I think if you disassemble the cv and leave the end of it bolted in at the wheel side it’ll stay together. Hard part is taking the cv apart to do that.

@eon_blue might have some other ideas

I’m thinking now all I need to do is replace the seal on the differential possibly and drive on ?

You can safely remove the front drive shaft (but it doesn't spin unless 4wd is engaged), but not the CV's. Without the splined CV axle shaft and retaining nut in place, the wheel will come off.

Can you post pics? This seems like a really strange problem to have.

Like others have said you will need to separate the outer mini shafts from the cv assembly as this piece essentially bolts the knuckle to the hub.

Might be a good idea to drain the diff as well or find some way to plug the openings.

Your telling me if a cv axle breaks that the wheel falls off?!?!? Mine sure as Hell wouldn’t. People have cut them out with sawsalls for eons if the joint fails on the side of the road. The oil might run out but who cares. Removing the front driveshaft won’t do squat if the front axles are still turning. Cut the friggen thing with a hacksaw and drive it home. You can’t exactly remove it properly on the side of the road or for cheap money. Have someone cut it.

Cutting the CV Axleshaft is much different than removing the cv axle assembly altogether... If you cut the axle shaft- the splined part of the cv axle will still run through the hub/bearing, and be held in place by the large nut.

Back in the day when these trucks were new (and the TTORA community was still running the Delphi-based forum), I witnessed someone break their CV axle on the trail during a group run. They proceeded to remove the remnants of the CV axle from the rig and try to limp home. This ultimately resulted in the wheel falling off. It happened a time or two to other members in the forum before the group consensus decided that it was not a safe practice.

Again, the key here is: you cannot remove the CV axle and drive. Cannibalizing a working CV with a sawsall or hacksaw is a different thing.

Maybe some other years but my 99 doesn’t care if there is an axle in the spindle or not. It would be grouchy about the oil running out of the diff though….

The axle IS the spindle. Read a book.

You talking to me skippy? The axle slides through the spindle. Try harder.
