I check each time I take on fuel.

Shut off engine, start the pump, begin filling tank, clean windshield, open hood, pull dipstick & wipe. Pump has shut off by this time. Finish at the pump, insert dipstick & pull. Check oil level. Reinsert dipstick, close hood. Leave.

My truck has 115,xxx miles and consumes less than 1/2 qt between 5K change intervals.

I try not to get too wound up over the level offset on the stick. Remember, the dipstick enters the oil sump (pan) at an angle. This will make one side read a bit higher. Suggest to read the low side....its worst case.
