I tried to paint one of my OEM gray plastic center caps and as it dried it turned milky. See pic (ignore runs the can dripped several times). I prepped by using steel wool then cleaning with alcohol. I put 2 coats of VHT primer then painted with dupli-color Toyota Barcelona Red. Any ideas what might of happened to cause this?

I'd suspect the primer and color coat are not compatible.

    Suggest to start over.

    Strip the cap.
sand with 180 gr ALO2 paper
    clean with ACETONE
make sure the primer and color are compatible. May need a primer that specifically bonds to plastic.
prime, let flash off and cure per instructions
color. multiple light coats. Allow flash off between coats.

    Lots baby!
I have seen this happen if you try to paint on a high humidity day.

    That looks better.

Need (MUST) make sure the primer, color and clear are compatible. Many odd things can happen, ie milky, orange peel, bubble, peeling, not curing.....in short it becomes a do-over mess.

Personally, I have had great results with 2K Urethane product from a single manufacturer within a single product line.

ignore the dates on the pics......I need to reset the camera date.
