    Hi -

I do not currently own a Tacoma. I have spent some quality time at dealerships, with Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace, all looking for a fairly priced Tacoma 4X4 Off Road. I'd be happy with anything 2010 to new, as long as the miles are low-ish. That said, it's crazy season - good luck finding something that is remotely resembling KBB or TrueCar, at least in California.

Now my question, I have stumbled across the truck in the subject. I plan to use the the truck off road *a little* but not a lot. Maybe twice a year, a few days or long weekend in Death Valley, or in the Sierras. Other than that, it'd be a kid/dog hauler with occasional dump runs.

The truck in question is $28k, with 91k miles. Would you (multiple choice):
    A. Pass on the truck altogether, and keep looking?
    B. Buy the truck, use it as is (and look like a poser most of the time)?
    C. Buy the truck, and sell of some of these things, replacing with more tame versions?
    D. Buy the truck, take parts on-and-off as needed (for example, pull the winch for 99% of the time)? If so, which parts?

Bonus points for how you inspect the truck.

Here's what I know, or think. The truck probably has a relationship with AllPro. If you believe the seller, the truck has never been off road. If you believe the seller, the car has been maintained at the local dealer since new, with 5K mile oil changes. I have NOT seen the truck, but will go see it Wednesday.

The upgrades that I know about.
All Pro front and rear aluminum bumpers
All Pro IFS Pro skid plate
    Some winch
Fox shocks in front (I assume with an external reservoir)
King shocks in the rear (with an external reservoir for sure)
    Method 17"
    KO2s, 33"

I guess that it may have other things on it, too, because several of these items are showing in the pix, but not in the listing.

Input welcome. Its MGM, which is not my favorite color. My wife likes it though.

    Thanks

Pics would be helpful to see all of the mods. Thanks.

I'd keep looking. $28k for 91k mi isn't a screaming deal. Any upgrades the PO added may or may not be upgrades in your eyes, and I use the rule of thumb - knock off about 50% of the original price when figuring in aftermarket parts' worth.

I also prefer to buy stock so when something goes wrong I can ask "what have I messed with and how is it related to the problem?"

I’d say that’s expensive as hell, even for today’s used car market. To put it in perspective, I paid $32,000 for my 2021 SR5 brand new…drove it off the lot with 3 miles on it.

even though it has a lot of fancy stuff done to it, and it is a Tacoma, I think $28K is ridiculous for anything with that many miles on it. Just my opinion though!

That being said, I’m sure it would last you forever if it’s been maintained as the seller claims and you treat it right.

I personally also wouldn’t want to buy something that someone else has done a bunch of aftermarket mods too unless you can be certain they were all installed professionally, but again that’s just me.

    OP,

After watching that Facebook video (if it's the same truck) I'd take a hard pass. I'd want something as original and reliable as possible for kid/dog/dump run duty.

$28k is pretty expensive for a used truck, even a Tacoma. You don't know what condition the mods are in, or if they were installed correctly. For that kind of money I'd go new or get a certified preowned. At the very least, get a clean stock truck.

What year is the Tacoma? Trim?
If you're not going to appreciate any of the major mods done to it already, I'd move on.

Thanks all. To me, that feels like a bargain at this point. The last time I was at the dealer - Friday - was that we are talking $50k for a 4X4 OR if I could get one at all.

I agree, @wguest - I walked out of the dealership within about 5 minutes. For what its worth, here's a pic or two of the truck - different license plate # than @clip showed.

Have a mechanic check it out. That price can't be too far off from market price. Have you looked up KBB price without the mods? Carvana offered me $19,500 for my 2010 with under 80k. If you're not going to doing anything to the truck is it worth having those mods already done for you?

Check the for sale section on here !! Last i checked there was a ‘15 trd pro for 29k with ~80k miles. Might have to do some traveling but fwiw i feel more comfortable buying a used truck off here than some rando off the street

@Eperotti good choice continuing the search. That one would have an easier time coming near $28k without mods in my book.

@wguest I agree on the high price. Although I paid $32k for my bone stock CPO 2015 OR with 14k mi...and I'd do it again in an instant if I had to. Knowing mine was only 4k off of this makes the choice to pass even easier.

For an additional data point, I saw a NY (rusty) 2015 DCSB OR for 25k with 134k miles last week, all stock and decent shape aside from the undercarriage.

Nice looking truck, hard time to be in the used car market now. Prices are definitely insane at the moment, not just for Tacoma’s. These used trucks are selling now at the same price I bought mine new for back in 2013. Good luck with everything OP.

    Stock, 4WD, Access Cab, White,
Modifications do not add to the value of the truck. Some mods will devalue.

If you have the VIN, any Toyota dealer can look up the maintenance history in their system.

Look into KBB, Carvana or other sources to determine the price range of the truck. Work withing that range.

To me, the $28K seems high.
