I'm trying to find out if there is a topper that is best for my 2015 Tacoma Dbl Cab TRD Pro. It has a short bed and is lined. I don't want to have to take the plastic off the bed in order to put a topper on. I've attached a picture so you can see what I mean. I use this truck off road and need something that will flex a bit and hold up to extreme cold and snow. Thanks for your input!

that's not a bedliner. that's the bed. It's composite plastic. Look underneath via the wheel well.

Great! Thanks for clarifying that. So what am I looking for 'underneath via the wheel well'? Thanks!

Was just saying you could look under the wheel well and see the plastic structure of the bed if you were curious. No metal. It's actually quite common for people to think that the Tacoma has a bedliner. I don't think any other truck ever had a composite bed like it does.

And as for a canopy, I'd just be on the lookout for any of the normal popular brands (ARE, LEER, etc) and as long as the Canopy is for a 2nd gen Tacoma, Double Cab Short Bed, you should be good. I personally had a Leer and had good luck with it before I had my AT Habitat topper.

Most shells go right on top of the plastic, mine does at least

Maybe a soft top is what you need.
    Best top or soft topper.

Any camper shell that’s made to fit your truck bed will be just fine. Leer, ARE, SnugTop etc. etc. I have a Leer, is just fine off road, on road, heat, cold, doesn’t matter.

A 180 lb Leer cap has been on my truck for 14 years. It's never been off. You don't need bed stiffeners unless you're carrying too much weight on top of the cap.

Which is best is personal. Most all of the popular brands are good, it just depends on personal taste, which features you are willing to pay for and who gives you the best deal. I went with Leer since they were the easiest to deal with and were closer. I don't want anything fancy, the one on my Tacoma is the most basic model they had and cost me $900 in 2007. I paid $1500 for a very similar cap in 2016 for my F150.

Due to the bed rail design on a Tacoma, especially at the front behind the cab, it is hard to get a good seal. Mine has always leaked a tiny bit in heavy rains. Not enough to hurt anything. Just a small puddle that stays in the valley's of the bed while anything in the bed is sitting on the ridges and never gets wet.

I love my SnugTop Rebel. Found it used on Craigslist for $1200, and it doesn't leak until I power wash it. Then there are a few drops inside. I replaced the struts with a $15 pair and it's like new.

I've got a ARE MX which is a bit higher than the roof of the truck and gives me that much more room where i don't have to crouch as much.
I also added bed stiffeners just in case plus it adds an extra tie strap point.
