I have a new 2021 Tacoma. A little over a week ago, I put a locking gas cap on. Yesterday I got the "check gas cap" message on my screen. I got out and made sure the cap was tight. Nest time I stated it up all was fine until today the check engine light came on. I attached a pic of the message. I am assuming this is because of the cap. Immediately I put the stock cap back on. My main question is will the CEL reset itself over time? I tried calling my dealer but can only leave a message(busy). Thanks.

You can remove the negative battery cable for 10 minutes to reset itself or better yet just bring it to the dealer as not yo complicate things by unplugging thr battery

If it was the gas cap it should go off on its own after driving the truck for a bit. You may also have a small evap leak, in which case you'll be taking a trip to the dealer. Getting a CEL from those aftermarket locking caps isn't uncommon.

Stop by almost any large auto parts retailer; they will pull the codes and tell you what the specific DTCs are; I would say timing argues against it being anything other than the gas cap, but if you have to go to the dealer, going with a little extra knowledge is never a bad thing.

maybe your locking gas cap doesnt have the proper tight seal... you can put the stock cap back on and drive for a bit and see if it goes off..

No clue why u need a locking gas cap ? You can’t siphon gas out of your tank using a hose .

Maybe he has a lot of people that don't like him and he's afraid they will pour sugar or some other nasty substance into his tank....

Back in the day, I worked the night shift in a bad area. I heard of a guy that had someone put sugar in his tank. Since then I've always had a locking cap. Yes that was 20 or so years ago and there is really no reason I should have one now but whatever. The stock one is back on since the CEL.

Something to consider when using a locking gas cap is that some gas thieves will drill a hole in the gas tank and leave you with a much bigger repair bill that replacing a tank of gas. Dealership told me this and advised against it when I tried to buy a locking gas cap some years ago.
