I really wanted to know how big of a difference lets say a 16x7" wheel with 7mm offset vs a 16x8" wheel with -12mm offset is. Is it just the offset or the one inch and the offset? Or is it not really an one inch that makes it stick out farther but one inch over all?

    Thanks

it's both. negative offset will always make it stick out more than positive offset. if both wheels have the same backspacing, the additional 1" width will stick out 1" more. take into consideration the tire size you plan to run as well. for instance, if you plan to use 285s, you'll probably need an 8" or wider wheel.

corrected myself: meant BS in my reference, not offset:D

Actually, wouldn't the additional 1" width balance on both sides if the offsets are the same?

1/2" sticking out and 1/2" towards the suspension?

Island Cruiser is absolutely correct. If two wheels have the same offset but different widths, you must divide the difference in widths by 2 to determine the clearance and stance differences.

    I.e. :

    16x7" 0mm offset

    vs.

    16x8" 0mm offset

The difference is 1". Divide 1" by 2, since the 1" is spread evenly across the barrel of the wheel. The offsets are exactly the same, so the only thing affecting clearance is the added width. You'll have the 8" wide wheel .5" further to the outside of the fender well, and .5" closer to the suspension on the inside.

If you wanted the new, 1" wider wheel to stick out a full 1" more compared to the 7" wide wheel, the new wheel would need to be 16x8" -13mm offset (-12.7mm to be exact, but offsets are not typically made in increments smaller than 1mm).

    I.e. :

The difference is 1". Divide 1" by 2, since the 1" is spread evenly across the barrel of the wheel. You'll have the wheel .5" further to the outside of the fender well, and .5" closer to the suspension on the inside. I used the example of 0mm offset because it's very easy to understand.

0mm offset means the mounting pad of the wheel is exactly in the center of the wheel. So if you have two wheels that are both 0mm offset, and one is 7" wide and the other is 8" wide, you know that .5 of those inches will be to the outside of the center, and .5 of those inches will be to the inside of center.

If you wanted the new, 1" wider wheel to stick out a full 1" more compared to the 7" wide wheel, the new wheel would need to be 16x8" -13mm offset (-12.7mm to be exact, but offsets are not typically made in increments smaller than 1mm).

Now, to compare exactly with the measurements you provided:

    16x7" +7mm offset

    vs.

    16x8" -12mm offset

The 16x8" -12mm offset wheels will sit outward (towards the edge of the fender or beyond) 1.25" additionally compared to the 16x7" +7mm offset wheels.

The 16x8" -12mm offset wheels will have .25" more suspension clearance as well (they wheel will be .25" further away from the suspension).

You're both confusing offset with backspace. Offset is related to the distance from the center of the wheel, not the lip of the inside rim.

I agree. Much easier to measure backspace also.

So how much it be sticking out further ?

    16x7" wheel 4.25" BS +7mm Offset
    vs,
    16x8" wheel 4.00" BS -11mm Offset.

And I don't think you should ever be afraid to correct someone if they're wrong, even if they are a vendor. That's how we all learn.

I agree. It's tricky sometimes posting on a forum. Our fingers can get going faster than our minds.

Old thread but still valid. As soon as I bought my 2021 OR, I upgraded rims to OEM Pros and unknowingly went from stock 16x8 to 16x7's. The tire shop that did my swap never brought up any issues or potential problems and they look great. I wanted to save some $$ and stick with the stock 265/70r/16 Wranglers for now. Is there any downside with smaller width such as handling? I owned a 2019 OR and now a 2021 and they both get a bit unruly in heavy winds on the interstate. Suspension is quite soft on this truck but very much appreciated on WI's rough roads.
