You need to make an appointment for this issue, mentioning it at the 5k service and they will do nothing. This is how the Toyota care works unfortunately.

Do the 21s have a cap or did they do away with it like a lot of newer vehicles?

I haven’t had it happen on my 17.

A factor in itself. Those capless systems are the absolute worst. If you have one of those OP, I would be taking a hard look at that neck.

So what you're saying is you stick the nozzle in the hole and at the end it shoots all over? Sounds normal to me. :dancingbacon:

Seriously though, I have a 2021 and it still has one of the one-click caps. Never had an overfill issue, it cuts right off when it's supposed to. I would have the dealer look at it, and I agree with those saying to make a separate appointment. When you go in for a regular ToyotaCare service they want you in and out (no pun intended).

The 21 Chevy work truck i have had that and it’s been fine so far.
Yet to have any issues with it.

I wasn’t sure if the new yotas have it too.

There should be a hose from the tank to the filler neck to vent air from the tank. It is either clogged or kinked.

I'm gonna check this out today.

I did have a fill-up yesterday where this problem didn't occur.

Not a single thing noted. The pump itself pumped slower than most.

So I'm thinking its definitely the speed of the pump. The interesting thing is that the pumps when it overflowed did shut off before/at the same time as the fuel started flowing.

Maybe one of the suggestions above might lead me to an answer.

All the hoses/tubes coming from the filler neck are metal. There are 3. So no kinks.

I'm leaning more heavily towards user error and subconscious idiocy

A few additions to make me feel cool.
I wonder if you take it in with a nearly empty tank if they will have to give you a tank of gas to see if they can duplicate the issue.

You're asking the right questions. And if this problem recurs... I can keep bringing it in...

So the pump will shut off automatically, just not soon enough? Is it always about the same amount of fuel that overflows?

Yeap and yeap. That’s why I had a crazy theory about the taco lean. Or maybe just the pumps pumping too fast.

Generally speaking, a pump that is pumping too fast will shut the flow off earlier, as the fuel tends to be more "frothy" and bubble up the filler neck.

The way to determine whether this is user error or not (and I can't imagine it is, but there's always a chance), is to have someone else, or better yet, several someones, fill up the truck at locations where you have had the issue occur. That will pretty conclusively eliminate you as the cause, THEN take it to the dealer ship and politely ask them to unf**k things. To me the only thing that makes sense is some sort of issue with the filler neck, such as it being bent more horizontally than it should be. Again, seems very remote and unlikely, but something has to be causing it.

I’ve looked with a flashlight and everything looks good. I have 1k miles so 4 fill ups. I noticed on 2 that the nozzle either was missing rubber and falling apart or seemed loose when inserted.

Fuel filler neck that was bent wrong I would think would cause it to shut off prematurely. We’ll see.

On the bright side I have a reason to go driving this weekend with the truck.

I assume by "missing rubber" you mean the accordion that covers up the filler? That's just intended to minimize vapours. The shut-off mechanism is actually that tiny hole at the bottom, end of the nozzle. Once fuel hit's that, the pump senses a pressure change and shuts off. My thinking was that if the filler neck were more horizontal than intended, the fuel could rise up, and then when the liquid level hits the sensor hole, it's closer than it should be causing the 'hiccup', but again... just pure, s**thouse speculation on my part.

Lol. Nope to that Taco lean theory.
