your starting with the right truck with very minimal invasive electrical system. its not looking for something that isnt there anymore. use a land cruiser manual transfer case swap and straight front axle and beg for someone to fab it all up. you will still have issues to resolve with the braking system looking for input while the truck is moving. Maybe fab rats in Utah on you tube.

Make a Pre-Runner. You get the look of a 4x4 and more mpg.

Best option is to buy an ATV and a trailer to pull it with your 2WD Tacoma.

If you are going to go to that much work and expense, you might as well do a solid axle swap as well. Hah!

Dumb question but if you’re not going off-road is there any reason to really have 4x4? If you have 4x2 is there a feature on the newer Tacomas to get unstuck from mud or soft sand if you do find yourself off road?

4wd is not just for rock crawling. It is very useful for things like driving on snowy roads, pulling boats up slick ramps, maneuvering a loaded trailer in a yard, pulling heavy objects, plowing snow, herding cows, etc... you know, doing truck things.

I’m saying every truck needs to be 4wd. I’m just saying it adds to the utility value of the truck in addition too it’s off road recreational value.

2wd pickups don’t come with crap to get unstuck (except perhaps for those oddball 2wd with rear locker prerunner thingies they sell in the SW). You have to settle with upgrading the tires, throwing weight in the bed, adding traction boards, shovel, etc.

The only common sense reason to do this, is if you were gonna do a solid front axle and a crawl box, paint the dash warning lights black, and turn the thing into a total off-road beast. In this case, the donor vehicle doesn’t matter so much, and a 2WD might be easier to convert in some ways, as there is less shit to unbolt.

If you plan is to turn the truck into what is essentially a stock 4WD Tacoma, from a stock 2WD, then you should only do it if you enjoy the immense challenge and don’t care about the extreme cost.

yeah that makes sense. Not really sure why it isn’t just standard, especially on the TRD models.

I'm actually surprised that more people don't do this. My ATV's (TRX450R and 300ex) take me to places I would never dream of taking my Taco, which isn't to say my Taco doesn't get to play in the dirt too, just that I'm a LOT more careful with my Taco.

I was in the same shoe as the OP, looked into doing a conversion to 4x4 and its not as simple as the 1st and 2nd gen Tacoma. So what I did was sold my 4x2 and gotten a 4x4.

I vaguely, hazily remember the days when I thought my truck was as bulletproof as I was.

Eventually I realized why I shouldn't treat my daily like a rented dirtbike. Because fixing it winds up being more expensive than purchasing a small engined toy to begin with, and also I'd rather not be forced to ride my bicycle to work. At least not again.

Yep, me too in. Twenty years ago when my T100 was my only vehicle I spent just about every weekend off-roading it. I thankfully never broke anything but I cringe when I looki-back on some of the places I took that 2wd truck! Though, it probably made me a better off-road driver.
