I actually have an extra set of FRS seats. What was needed to install them?

I just used the hardware off the bench seat. It doesn't line up perfectly, but I got it to work. They are awesome! Installing a rotrax supercharger with intercooler next week, if anyone is interested to see that.

You can swap the seat sensors between the seats or you can bolt them up. Everything swaps over pretty easily. Took about 2-3hrs

The seats fit perfectly in the truck. And it feels amazing. It's an amazing upgrade. I will never go back to that bench seat.

As much as I'd like better seats, the though of not having the airbag go off, or worse having it go off WRONG keeps me from running anything but the stock seats.

Been in a T-bone accident in a 08 Scion xD, drunk guy ran a red light doing 60 in a 40 with a Hyundai Santa Fe, I was on the hit side and the seat airbag and side curtain airbags both went off, not saying I wouldn't have lived without them but I probably wouldn't have walked away from it like I did.

Yea, I totally understand. I debated it for 6 months but life is full of surprises and I was tired of having shiftty seats. People die all the time in freak accidents. If I die, its my time to go. Atleast I'll have badass seats

I had CRX seats in my ‘84. Made it a different animal. Well done!

Not knocking you, even just waking up and getting out of bed in the morning is accepting a level of risk, a low one but you're still taking a chance in anything you do, if you've weighed the pros and cons and you're willing to live with the consequences then go for it, they look great and I'm sure they feel good too.

Not putting you down, just adding a counterpoint for anyone who might not have considered it.

fyi - In an 05’ the airbag system was far more simple and there were no airbags in the seats themselves just a couple of sensors. What I described and what the op replied with is all that is required for a seat swap and the airbag system still works exactly as designed.

    In theory...

But an airbag isn't just a switch, on or off, a lot of factors are calculated by the vehicles crash computer including timing of when exactly to deploy the airbag from maximum effect as modern airbags are designed to deflate almost as fast as they inflate and maximum effective deployment time is based on airbag volume fill rate which will vary now from what the crash computer is calibrated for.

The FRS seat has a different airbag, a different size, different deployment conditions, and is designed to react to a vehicle of significantly lesser mass, it may have the same connector, it may even deploy at the Tacoma's signal, (it might not, there could be different amperage requirements) but the deployment rate is going to be different.

It's also entirely possible for the airbag to go off at exactly the wrong time and cause more injury than it prevents.

Personally if I was to put a different seat in my vehicle I would not connect the airbags. I honestly believe that would be safer.

Here's what 700ths of a second difference makes.

    That's life or death.

Am I being dramatic, possibly, but I'm not a NHTSA safety engineer.

    YMMV.

    :notsure:

But damn if you don't look cool and feel great just like riding a motorcycle without a helmet.

I am not sure if you are trained in air bag systems or just getting the info from videos. Not being rude, but a lot of what you are saying is not correct or not exactly correct. I have been working with and trained thru I-car on airbags for 20 years plus.

The computer does not dictate a fill rate. The bag deploys based on when the airbag control unit sends a signal to the individual modules to deploy That signal deploys a primarily nitrogen gas charge to fill the airbag making it deploy through the module cover. The gas charge and speed of deployment is why people get burns from airbags. The airbag has large holes designed to disperse the gas at a certain rate to deflate just as fast.

Some airbags are dual stage, meaning they have a second charge. Those can go off in stages if the ecu determines it is needed. It happens so quick you do not know the difference. The sensor in the passenger seat is there to detect the passenger and weight. It activates the bag if the passenger is above a certain weight. The computers can also determine if the seat belt is being worn before deployment.

There is a lot more involved in airbags, but that is some of the basics of deployment.

And of course you will tell all your passengers that you have altered the air bags so they might not work. Are you also determining if it is their time to go?
