A Tundra shouldn't be towing 11000 lbs much less a Tacoma.

Kinda reminds me of that line from The Hunt for Red October: "Captain, Engineer reports 105% on the reactor possible, but not recommended..." :D

Seriously though, I didn't think these trucks were rated for more than 6,800 lbs. How do you do that? All downhill? lol. I hope you at least have a WDH!

When towing that much, you're not gonna rip the frame off or anything like that. I think The reason the Tacoma isn't rated >6800lbs is because of the brakes, etc. In other words, just don't drive it like you stole it;)

I tow a 24 foot pontoon boat with mine that's, all-told, about 5,000 pounds between the boat and the trailer. I know surface area comes into it, but I would not feel comfortable towing much more than that at all, and it isn't the brakes.

Yeah, we all have our takes. TW isn't exactly made up of people who abuse their trucks, so I know my methods are unpopular here

You won’t regret not getting the v6 for towing, but you will regret getting the 4 banger because it’s so damn slow the rest of the time. Get the V6 if you can. I think it’s highly worth the price difference, although some people say the V6 is also a dog from how the trans is tuned.

I towed my friends bayliner(4000lbs) a few weeks ago with my 2.7 through some steep valleys. It worked fine no overheating. A half ton V8 would’ve been nice but you work with what you have.

I think I read somewhere that Toyota engineers figured the standard cooler was enough so they pulled the aux cooler.

Yeah, but what's their standard for acceptability? If it's just that the truck can make it beyond the powertrain warranty or maybe some arbitrary lifetime like 100,000 miles, would you consider it good enough to not add an auxiliary cooler if you were towing fairly regularly? I have a manual transmission, so I don't really have a dog in this fight, but I know I'd be considering adding a cooler if I had an automatic for towing the pontoon boat I mentioned earlier.

If you're towing 11,000 lbs and get in an accident, you're giving your insurer a good reason to not cover you, especially if you're at fault, as even if you managed to get away with a 10% tongue weight, that leaves between 50 and 160 lbs for the driver, let alone a bag of potatoes chips, before your vehicle is over GVWR/GCWR. I'm not saying I haven't been overloaded as well, but for liability reasons, I try and avoid it.

funny enough, I talked to my insurance company about this. Not like they haven’t had claims before with overloads right? “Only matters if you’re commercial” is the answer I got

I think any advantages of the 2.7 I4 died with the 2nd gen. It was a more economical engine to run than the 4.0, and the 2nd gens weighed about 2-300 lbs less, IIRC, than the 3rd gens. With a 5M, The 2nd gen is completely adequate, as long as you didn't load it up with armor and LT265 BFG K/O's.
I bought the 2.7 5M because it is simple to work on, the speed limits are slow here, and gas regularly hits $7.00 a gallon. As for resale, I think there is as much as, or more of a market for the 4cyl, as they are so rare.

Your insurance company doesn't care, because it's a 100% out for them to NOT cover a single cent of your liability.

If you are being serious and tow 11,000lbs with a Tacoma on the road, you are an idiot. I only hope when it inevitably bites you in the ass you don't kill or injure some innocent bystander.

In Rainman's defense, there's nothing illegal about exceeding the manufacturer's GVWR limit for a vehicle so long as you don't exceed the weight for your type of license. On the other hand, grossly exceeding it could open you up to civil liabilities in the aftermath of careening into that proverbial bus full of nuns and orphans. It's also possible, though highly unlikely unless deaths are involved, that criminal charges could be brought for reckless driving or some other sort of negligence.

Take notes from Charlie, roc. Hes speaking from knowledge, not imagination. There’s a reason the only instance of that you could find, happened in another country
