    Random trivia…

An antelope can jump higher than an average house. This is due to its very powerful legs and the fact that an average house can’t jump.

My vacation balance is 196.89 hours and year to date used is 158.
Sure don't seem like I've used that much vacation because, mostly a couple days here and there. For extended play weekends
I think 13.33 hours a month or something accrued.

I love NM but we don’t have the diversity of critters you find elsewhere. At least not in my area. It’s too dry and hot for all but the toughest. We have snakes and lizards out the wazoo. Jackrabbits and turkey buzzards.

But I love snakes and lizards too and you've got all the spikey fun stuff.

Those are some damn nice numbers. I accrue 144 hours total per year at my job (5.54 hours every 2 week pay period). Although being in California, I have the advantage that by state labor laws, I can roll any unused PTO time over to the next year, CA law classifies "accrued" time off to be the same thing as wages earned, and an employer cannot take away something that has been earned. My company is HQd in St Louis, MO, and they have no such state law, so most of my team mates lose any PTO time that they don't take by the end of the year.

My first employer (after my Army service, and earning my Engineering degree), didn't accrue vacation. You got "about 3 weeks a year" for 0 - 7 years of service, and "about 4 weeks a year" upon your 7 year anniversary with that company, and that was the max. You had full access to all of those days as of January 1 each year, you didn't need to wait for them to slowly build up. And by "about X days", they meant that if you had something come up later in the year and needed a couple extra days off, beyond your allotted amount, as long as your manager was ok with it, you were good to go. We didn't fill out time cards, there was no formal vacation request/approval process.... you asked your manager, and that was all there was to it.

My current employer, even though I am classified as a salaried employee, I still have to fill out a timecard for every week, account for every hour. And I have to submit a formal request to use PTO days through our HR system, my manager has to approve it, or else I can't take the time. If my manager is busy and doesn't see the email telling him he needs to approve my PTO request, it times out after 1 week and automatically denies my request, I have to submit a new one. This is the 4th employer I have worked for in my IT career, and the only one that has required time cards of all employees. Or at least those of us who are not Managers.
