Yeah this thread is why I now carry a 10' roll of bailing wire and high strength duct tape in the bed box

 

Most folks carry a spare. A few (very) know how to change a tire. But what do you do when you get the second flat?

Well most simply wring their hands in consternation. But have you ever popped the bead and put in a tube? For sidewall damage, ever hear of a Baja Boot? Do you know how to mount and dismount a tire using actual tire irons? And I won’t even ask if you know how to do it without those handy hunks of iron.

Ever used a hi lift and a piece of rope and a stick to pop a bead loose and the reset it.

These are all things one “should” need to know before getting a license much less venturing off road. And we haven’t even literally gotten off the ground.

The thread about the bolt through the side wall motivated this diatribe. So how about some tire fixes?

By the way I’ve used all of the above techniques and tools to fix the lowly tire.

 

Where to start? lol

How about bending my lower link 90 degrees on Claw Hammer. Then winching out the last 300 yards. Then using a 16" prybar, ratchet straps and Gorilla tape to fix it enough to drive back to the lake bed and camp.

 

Now these are trail fixes. Keep them coming.

I had a 86 ford 4x4 pickup manual 4-speed. My throttle cable broke on my gas pedal while off roading and I was really screwed.
I ran a wire through the firewall and worked the gas by hand 300 miles.

 

That works well enough to drive it home too!

 

I’ve seen photos of covered wagons using the same trick. Proving that a good idea is a good idea no matter what century.

 

This is ridiculous, and it's the kind of attitude that keeps people from throwing three friends in a vehicle and heading out into the world to learn how to do things when shit hits the fan. It's okay to learn from your own experiences. If someone told me 25 years ago that I shouldn't have a license, much less be going off road until I knew about all the different methods to mount/re-mount a tire, I'd tell them to kick rocks.

I'm much more worried about people on the road knowing how to merge,, use their damn mirrors, use a turn signal, and keeping right except to pass, etc. etc.
I'm not at all worried about them knowing how to seat a bead with a can of brake cleaner and a lighter.
