265’s vs 285’s

285/75r16

 

I've looked a lot and found that for what I do with my truck, 275 and more was making my truck worse.

For my need at least.

 

I ASSUME you're talking about 285/75/16 vs 265/75/16.

If so the 285/75/16's will give you about 3/4" wider tire, and about 5/8" more ground clearance (about 1 1/4" taller tire). If 5/8" of ground clearance means getting through something you need to learn how to drive. The wider 285 width tire will float on sandy terrain better. The narrower 265 width tire works better on snow, ice, mud, and wet pavement.

To fit 285/75/16's requires you to modify the truck. They are only available in LT series tires costing $70-$80 more per tire and are 15-20 lbs heavier than a standard load 265/75/16.

To me the extra $300 for a set of tires, the expense of modifying the truck, and the reduced fuel mileage and on road performance just isn't worth the tiny gains in off road performance.

 

I just got 265 70 17 Falken Wildpeaks on my 2021 OR, my question was if the difference would be significant enough. I know 285’s look great on these trucks with a decent lift however I didn’t what the MPG hit, or power loss. Wheels are SCS Ray 10’s which I like the look. Thanks for responses. These tires actually made me now consider looking for a 1.5 inch lift instead of the 2 I originally planned for.

I have 265/75/16 on my truck, they look great on my 1st gen. Not sure how much they compare to 285s, but I guess it depends on what you are doing as what others have stated above.

 

285s look better but are a lot of work for the minimal amount of clearance they give you. I personally think the third gen autos need to be re geared with 285’s and added amor.

Simple question without a simple answer. Doing full suspension with adjustable UCAs and a proper off road alignment? 285s.

Keeping stock suspension? 265s.

Honestly the best choice is probably 255/85s, I wanted to go with that but the tire selection is pathetic and they were all on back order when I needed tires. Probably would’ve waited but I happened to slit a sidewall on my 265s a week before lifting it so just went with 285s and have been pretty happy. Width doesn’t give you as much benefit off road as people think. Even in soft stuff most of your useful floatation comes from a longer contact patch, wider gives you some float but more forward resistance as well which makes you more likely to dig in and mostly negates the floatation benefit from the width.

lo-pro muddies are the best tires. Best of all worlds. Performance when you need it, muddin’ when you don’t. Surprised more fellas don’t run em on their tacos.

 

I just posted this in another thread but it applies here also, I just bumped from a 265/75/16 geolander mt to a 285/75/16 toyo rt, and actually gained mpg. Tread pattern and compound play as much of a role as size and weight. That being said, 285’s are perfect. Wish I had went that route first.

 

The 255s are about a half in thinner, but are an inch and a half taller if I remember correctly. Ive had both and the 255 look a lot more aggressive.

Here’s a side by side comparison OP. You can tell by the pics that it’s a pretty big difference. Sizes in the pictures are 265/75R16 and 285/75R16.
To answer your question, for off-roading, bigger is always better

 

Hands down the 285s are the safe way to go
