Travel trailer tow

Only 100* ? That doesn’t seem right or I’m not reading this right ? My truck runs between 170-185 degrees on a normal day not towing anything.

 

I hit trans temps (TC) up to 220 sometimes and engine temps of 200 while towing my camper up long hills at around 55-60 mph . Guesstimate my weight I’m pulling around 4000 pounds camper ,all gear and people .

I tow a 5100 lb Grand Design 17MKE. Up and down and all around.

 

Just got back from weighing the truck with some gear in the back . Just because I’m curious. Large Plano tote with Jack and tools in the bed . Small tool box I take on camping trips. Easy up canopy,2 beach chairs ,2-2.5 gallon jerry cans filled with gas and a small cooler with 10 beers in it .Very small amount of kindling wood . Aftermarket hitch for towing the travel trailer . Transmission cooler. Tires are 285/70/17 with American Racing Baja Aluminum wheels.
Truck weighed in at 4780
Aftermarket rear bumper ,weld on sliders . Bilstein 6112s ,5125s in the rear with Dakar’s HD .I was guessing around 4300 but I was off a bit . Camper weighs in at 2790 dry . Might as well add another 200 pounds of stuff in there also . Then I weigh 190 ,wife 140 . Puts me up around 8100 ! All that in a truck that I purchased new without a tow package because 14 years ago I towed nothing

EDIT: I do have a weight distribution hitch and trailer brake control.

 

Hmmm double post . Chime in if anybody thinks this is too much for the Tacoma

 

Did you weigh each axle on a CAT scale? As long as you don’t exceed the max axle weights the 8100 combined doesn’t sound bad if your rig is rated for a combined weight of 11,xxx or so.

 

This is the door jamb sticker . As stated no tow package SR5 when I purchased new in 2008 . Weighed truck as a whole not individual axles

 

What I have added in aftermarket stuff is beyond anything OEM Toyota .

 

My take is if you’re exceeding your individual GAWR then you have too much weight for the truck. Only way to know is to weigh the axles. The amount of weigh you pull is not as critical as the ability to stop it when you have to.

 

Right, my best bet is to hookup my camper and get the truck weighed by each axle . This will obviously show the weight being put on each axle . I did upgrade my front brakes to Powerstop rotors and pads and have the electric brake control for the trailer . 6 years towing now ,no issue Thanks for your input . I’m definitely going to get that done .​
