Just bought a 1995 tacoma 2.7 engine and it starts good but only runs a few seconds and dies and this goes on for a while and then after it warms up most of the time it will idle. I removed the throttle body and cleaned good and also removed the IAC and cleaned but didn't replace anything. No fix .......what should I start replacing first?

Did you figure out the problem? My 96 with the 2.7 does this and is also running rough.

I had an issue where idle was at 2500 rpm at start up/idle, replaced the idle air control valve and it fixed it. Is the rpms going to low then dying, running rough like a misfire? maybe try a compression test real quick, could be burnt valve that the 3rz motors are known for.

Rpms drop and engine dies and does act like a misfire. Already replaced the iac. Brand new head and valves also just rebuilt motor.

hmm in that case then I would check timing, maybe it slipped a tooth while putting the head back on, I know it can be a pain in the ass since you have to slide the head over the chain.

Dealership set the timing after the build because they said it was off on the cams. I'm leaning more toward a fuel issue but not sure what else to check. Injectors, fuel pressure regulator, plugs, wires, distributor cap, and rotor are new. Fuel pump is about 2 years old

hmm dealership set timing but didn't diagnose why its dying and running rough? its actually pretty easy to test fuel pressure on 1st gens. There is a fuel line near the manifold with a clamp, you can put a tee fitting in there to put a gauge, I belive fuel pressure should be around maybe 40-50PSI don't quote me not too sure but if its around that number I think fuel pump is good. There also is a fuel filter beneath the intake manifold you can swap out before replacing the fuel pump. If you look at my avatar, pretty much what I did to replace my fuel pump. removed rear bumper, disconnect tail lights, unbolt fuel filler panel, remove bed bolts and jacked it up by adding bricks on driveside. Easy access to fuel pump replacement.

When they rest the timing it wouldn't hardly run at all. They rest it and told me I had a bad injector. For the price they wanted to change one injector I wouldn't let them do it.

oh if that's the case, then I would have the injectors cleaned/service. Its a lot cheaper to have them serviced /cleaned than replacing with an OE (don't buy injectors that are non OE, will have fuel trim issues).

I replaced them with what were supposed to be Denso injectors but for the price I don't believe they were. I will get my original one back out tomorrow and have them cleaned to see if it does better
