I’m about to replace the shocks on my 2012 (180k miles) with some Bilstein 4600s and noticed today that the stock coils are starting to show a bit of rust. At this point I’m wondering if I should just replace the coils while I’m at it since I’ll be replacing the top hats as well. Just wanted to get some other opinions on this.

Are you lifted or just trying to keep it stock? If just stock I would probably just sand down the surface rust and hit it with some black spray paint.

edit: I would be a little more concerned with those upper control arms.

I’m planning on keeping the stock height, so I’ll just try to clean up those springs then.

Upper and lower control arms are on the to-do list, this rabbit hole is a bit deeper than I thought it would be. I probably should have expected rust to be an issue on this truck with 6 years in New England…

If you are taking everything apart then I would suggest getting a wire wheel and hit all the surface rust with it in the wheel well and then spray painting it all.

You may be able to get some free or cheap take offs from someone in here. This way no work cleaning involved and fresher set of springs maybe

I have some take offs, but they are rustier than that after one winter season.
