    I admit, I am a (Computer) Engineer, but I have known a lot of other Engineers that are "book smart" but completely clueless about anything in the real world. And I really, really think that automotive designers are a lot of real fooktards. None of them have ever had to actually touch their designs in real life, of they would fix this kind of shit at the design phase, and vehicles would be so much easier to work on.
