Well guys, I bit the bullet and just had the mini split installed. 6200 bucks. It is a 3 ton Mitsubishi. Took two guys that work on this shit over 6 hours to install and vacuum down. They were cooking out there. If I would have done the DIY kits I would have had 12 feet easy coiled up outside because I don't have a flare tool or the means to evacuate the gas from cutting the line. Hurt the wallet but at least I can get to work out there now. Thanks all for your advice when I asked.

Congrats. Didn't realize they were that expensive. I just hired a landscape architect to help me build a roughly 20"x20" shop that I want to be air conditioned. I'm trying not to think about how much it's going to cost.

At least the cooling cost will be pretty cheap in something that small.

So what’s the rest of what’s been done to keep the temps low without running it non stop. Seems like it’s dry walled, so assuming insulation already? Did you just do the basic styrofoam rectangle things for the garage door or something else? I’d be interested in this same type of setup, as I’m already insulated minus the garage door part.

I'm not sure if the walls are insulated but I'm not going to do that. I will be putting some insulation on the doors soon though. It has been running out there for roughly 2 hours now and I can't really feel a difference between the house at 75 degrees and the garage when I go out there now and my wife opened the bigger of the two doors half way when she got home from picking up the kiddo.

Neither did I. The first quote I got was from the guys that are at the exit of Costco. They wanted 9000 for a 2.5 ton installed. About shit my pants.

3 tons is the equivalent of how many BTUs? I've been shopping around a little bit with the plan to put in a mini split in my two car garage but from what I've been seeing they typically advertise BTUs and not tonnage

Edit: looks like 3 tons is 36k btu. I think I only need 2 tons in my 2 car garage

Oh man! And I thought my $350 portable swamp cooler was baller! Garage goals! Congrats on a nice install. Definitely a little envious of how cool your garage is.

Whynter 14,000BTU dual hose portable AC can be had for around $500 on Amazon. I have used this unit for a few different projects and it would actually do pretty well in a garage. I would recommend it as a good cheaper option. Just don’t bother with single hose portables. Their design is dumb and they don’t work for shit.

I currently work in a 800sqft garage with a mini split and it does really well when the door is shut, it takes about .5-1 hour for the system to adjust after pulling a hot viechle in. If the garage is open the cooler doesnt do too much, it doesnt have enough cfm to keep up.

In the past ive used portacooler evaporative coolers, they work well, but the downside is the humidity and it doesnt cool the air super cold like AC. But it has alot more cfm, so if your working with the door open and your in front of the fan, you usually stay pretty comfortable.

Overall, because we have a large garage, the mini split was a better choice for us as we can almost always have the garage door shut. If we couldnt we wouldve gotten a porta cooler.

Yeah that will probably do it. My 3 car garage is oversized too. I can fit my Ram 1500 in it no issue so I have a lot of area to cool.

You can buy a 3 ton unit on ebay for 2k. That installer made a killing.
In my opinion the mini split is the only answer, they work great. I even put one in my RV.
    Swamp coolers suck.

Swamp coolers are from the old days before AC was standard in AZ. Don’t bother, they are pretty useless. It’s the spacer lift of the cooling world.

    Disagree 100%

I have a big swamp cooler I got for $300. When it starts warming up we use it and I don't have to turn on my AC until mid/late July. Costs less than $30 a month to run it 24/7. Way cheaper than running an AC and I can keep my house at 72'ish during the day and high 50's at night. Keeps my entire house cool (2100sqft). It's not as nice as an AC but works great, costs damn near nothing and I like having the humidity.
