Muffler/Tail Pipe rattling

So I finally narrowed down the location of this periodic "clunk" when going over abrupt bumps on the passenger side. The design of the factory exhaust assembly allows it to travel up and down freely about an inch or so while supported with rubber bushings. The noise is coming from the fast down travel of the entire exhaust. It sounds like a blown shock. I can also hear a slight squeek fom the two springs and bolts that hold the two exhaust pieces together.

Question...has anyone else noticed this sound? What could I do to get rid of it?

It only happens during abrupt movement (bumpy roads)...not during normal driving.

 

I just bought a 2010 Tacoma Long Bed TRD sport and I noticed the exact same thing. After a bit of looking underneath, I determined quite conclusively the same issue. The exhaust pipe is welded to a steel bar which is attached to a rubber 'spring' type hanger that allows the tailpipe to travel up and down. My findings show that is the metal bar type bracket that makes contact with the leaf spring. Im not sure what can be done.

The only thing I have thought of is taping a pad or something to the steel bar bracket to muffle the sound but it would have to handle the heat of the exhaust. Another thought is using a more ridged rubber hanger but Im not sure what could be found.

Would love to hear more input on this issue. It is quite a clunk!

 

I have had this issue before. You can buy stiffer rubber exhaust hangers, should fix your problem.

I look at things figure out where the noise is coming from if it is the exhaust .

Install a clamp and universal hanger preventing the exhaust from hitting anything.

Then things like this really don`t bother me once I know the source not like the fuel tank is bouncing around having one fall off was enough of an embarrassment
