Just bought an 07' 4.0 DC auto, 247k. Doing all fluids and general tuneup items to set a baseline maintenance schedule.

I ordered these after seeing a post about them. After they shipped, I saw a post against them concerning the platinum. Advice please. Should I install?

NGK 7654 PLFR6A-11 Laser Platinum Spark Plug

    Thanks

Copper has the least resistance. Platinum last the longest. Vehicles designed for platinum have a stronger ignition spark to overcome the resistance. You get better performance in your truck with copper.

Note that copper also lasts the shortest, hence why it's not a bad idea to find a happy medium, I believe I'm running the NGK iridiums.

When I worked for the dealer we had a little chart that had the recommended lifespan of each plug conductor type, copper I think was only 30k miles tops at the bottom.

The iridiums were 70k I think and platinums like 100k but it's been a long time.

But @knayrb isn't wrong, IRC my buddy ran nothing but coppers in his drift car, but he also changed them every weekend because at the end of an event they would be completely worn down and out of spec on the gap. But he was also running something like 30 PSI on a massive turbo RB build.

Performance vs longevity, I kind of doubt no offense your Tacoma is like mine and not classified as a high performance vehicle therefore you're probably just fine with what you got, I doubt it will ever make a difference.

On the other hand, the coppers are cheaper.

I just picked up a full set of plugs for my truck from the dealer/parts section here in Maryland. $27 for OEM plugs that were Pre-gapped. Just easy and less than hour to install.

Well, I'm retired and only plan on putting around town and a highway trip every now and then.

    The truck is stock.

    So these platinums are ok?

So long as NGK says they're compatible and you did say you ordered them NGK for your truck then yes, if I had them in hand to do the job I'd probably put them in mine instead of getting different ones.

They might outlive the rest of the truck though!

Open the Owner's Manual. In the back there will be the recommended plugs.

Just use those. The copper Denso in a 2nd Gen 4.0L have a 30K change interval, about 3 years. The DIY change takes about 1 hour. The plugs cost <$5/each.

IMHO, pretty cheap for a 3 year interval.....

Yeah, I ordered through NGK and they are compatible.

But returning is no big deal if the coppers are best. Just learning this truck.
