Car Care Nut , this guy is good!, today I just remembered something he recommended in regards to the 4x4 system. He's basically recommending that once a month...or once in a while to engage the 4 high then 4 low...you don't even need to go for a long drive...did that today in my driveway. Very smooth operation!, currently 16k miles/26k kilometers

He didn't just come up with that idea on his own. It's in the owners manual.

Try it out sometime! You might learn a few more things.

He has a good technical overview of the Tacoma.

Not enough bandwidth on the internet to list.
I started bingeing on his videos a number of months ago while doing my homework on Toyota and the Taco since it is my first of either. Very confidence inspiring for sure. His series on the Taco was epic to see since I only had my truck a few weeks before it came out. I'm looking forward to using his maintenance tips over the next 20 years!

If I remember correctly, the manual says to drive 10 kilometers a month in 4wd. I do that on my way to work on days of a good rain fall. 4 years, 54,000kms and no issues.

Absolutely, but this technician said that even doing in your driveway you're engaging the solenoids and plunger so it will not be stuck when you do need it.

Ofcourse he didn't just...not everyone is flipping through the owners manual, some of us have multiple vehicles with various systems...so relax, I was merely trying to share a simple idea...maybe you read everything and know it all...I got a low mileage Tacoma that didn't see any 4x4 duty since almost a year ago...

I engage my 4 x 4 every time it rains. I get my minimum monthly miles in that way.

Cuz you know, It was a new truck and I read the manual.

FWIW..... I always read the manual for any vehicle. This at least provides an overview of the equipment, how to operate features and maintenance schedule.

I know my wife and daughter won't RFM and all the upkeep falls on my shoulders.

Engaging the 4WD is more than just actuating the solenoids and such. You need to DRIVE it for the 10 miles. The simple act of driving it will allow the front diff, xfer case, driveshafts, etc to circulate the lubricant. Keeps all the mechanical bits wet and slippery and happy......

<edit> We have 4 vehicles spanning from 1981 to 2019. I've read all the OM.

My 2019 manual is 700 pages long, I’ll read it right after I finish up War and Peace and Victor Hugo’s Les Miserables. For now like most I skimmed it and read the sections where I have interest at a given moment.
I just don’t spend that much time in the shitter to read the whole thing from cover to cover.

Do you drive "War and Peace" or "Les Miserables"?

    Do maintenance on either?

Its your choice if you want to know the details of the vehicle or just guess at how it works. Then again the guessing can give rise to complaining about things not working.

    Happy Operation.

Haha you missed the humor, but not surprised. i’ve been “happily” operating vehicles for 45 years. Pulled and rebuilt my first engine at 17. Engineer able to read and understand and fix and modify what I wish to. I read what I choose to, I don’t need to read the three pages of how to operate windshield wipers and washer. Be sure to bookmark that part!
    Happy motoring! lol
