Hacked: The PS3's Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2
It’s left the online multiplayer game in a state of complete disarray, with one Joystiq reader lamenting that it's a 'total shambles and unplayable’.
Some Call of Duty enthusiasts, for example, have ended up on hacked servers and had all their stats wiped, which if you’re a fan of the game, will send a cold shiver down your spine.
What’s more, there doesn’t seem to be a solution in sight.
Infinity Ward creative strategist Robert Bowling said on the company’s web forum:
‘Sony has recently acknowledged a breach in security on the PS3 which has resulted in the hardware and its games to become exposed to exploits and hacks. Modern Warfare 2 is no exception to this security exploit and we understand that some of you have experienced problems with stats and other issues associated with this.
‘Games rely on the security of the encryption on the platforms they're played on, therefore; updates to the game through patches will not resolve this problem completely, unless the security exploit itself is resolved on the platform. However, that doesn't mean we're not going to look into every option available to us. Regretfully, Call of Duty games are receiving the bulk of the hacker's attention, due to its high player counts and popularity. However, the number of legitimate players severely outweighs the bad apples.’
Bowling added that the current game in the franchise, Black Ops, is unaffected by the security breach: 'In the future we plan to adjust our approach to not rely solely on platform security and reduce the ability for this to happen in our games, as has already been displayed by the work Treyarch has done on Call of Duty: Black Ops to prevent similar measures.'
Until the issue is resolved by Sony, it looks like the only safe way of playing Modern Warfare on the PS3 is to use the party and private match options to avoid rogue servers.
Or play Black Ops.
The PS3 security breach was made by members of a hacking group called failOverflow and George Hotz, who made the news for jailbreaking the iPhone.
