My 2018 Tacoma with 35" tires drove a lot better than my 2021 with 33" tires.
It seemed like with the 35" tires, the stock gearing was a better match for that set up. (Although I never got to 6 gear). The ratio seemed to actually work better with the 35" tires. My 2018 didn't have the "searching for the right gear" issue.
Sounds counter-intuitive, but somehow it worked.

Turbo off a volvo, starion intercooler, charge pipes and hose clamps from home depot, aquarium check valves in vacuum lines so the ecu does not trip when it sees boost instead of vacuum, FMU for fuel pressure regulator.
AutoMeter dancing air fuel ratio monitor. Blow off valve from old supra for the wooooshhh

    I miss the 90’s at times…..

If you want actual HP gains I think a turbo or supercharger is the only way to go. Re gear will give you more low end torque making it feel less sluggish.

I've been reading about these tunes that are available. I know they change the shift points of the transmission and allegedly make the truck less sluggish.

Unless you can develop more torque in the engine to improve torque/HP ratio You should re-gear and that will give the feeling of more torque. The tunes, to my understanding, improve BOTH torque and HP but, you still will not have more torque than HP which is certainly desirable in a 4wd. The tune for me produced enough "felt" power increase overall with both to pass on the gearing. And, in 4wd/lo range, it should have plenty of power.
