One of my worries manifested itself last night when I could not get the center knob off during a "test pull", and I thought that maybe the knobs weren't supposed to come off; However, just now I was able to get it off...

Also, my truck has officially exceeded the previous record for most miles on a vehicle owned by my family!

    B35C3CBF-92FF-4CDE-A75C-A10E877557A8.jpg

The previous record was held by our 2004 Honda Odyssey EX, which was purchased new in May 2004 and had something like 133K when we sold it in 2013; The 1996 Nissan Pathfinder traded for the Tacoma still holds the record for longest time my family has kept a vehicle, at just a few months over 13 years. My Tacoma will become the new record holder in that category by the end of January 2023!

So, my truck is going in for one more inspection at the dealership about a week before the warranty period ends; The once service manager at Thompson Toyota informed me that there's a 50/50 chance of my truck getting a new frame at this point, and that there a good chance it'll get the new and improved frame treatment if it does not qualify for the complete frame replacement...

If it doesn't qualify for either, I'm getting the one incredibly minor rust spot on the frame rail beneath the driver's door professionally repaired and having the frame treated; I need this truck to last me at least another five years so I can save up for a house!

I'm going to predict exactly what will happen based on the pics you posted. (And I work at a dealer.) 1) You will not get a new frame - not even close. 2) You will get the latest frame corrosion treatment process which will qualify you for the "12 years from first in-service date" warranty. Ladies and gentlemen, place your bets.

So it won't really give me an extension on the warranty?

Also, what the hell is required to get a new frame?

If a new frame is out of the question then I'd take whatever they give you (if its free). Probably not great advice but its better than dishing out thousands (the situation I'm in).

So you're basically spending thousands to save your 1st Gen that is WAYYY out of warranty?

When I finally got my learner's permit, my dad said he'd buy me a new vehicle; I wanted a truck or an SUV...

We decided on a Toyota because of their reputation for quality and reliability; I just a wee bit pissed that my Toyota is having this issue with the frame!

As I've (repeatedly) stated, your frame needs to be in much worse shape than its in. You're not even close. No way, no how. The frames I see qualifying for replacement are total rotted out pieces of crap. At a minimum, you must have a 10mm hole rusted completely through. At the rate yours is rusting, that should be another 10-15 years.

As for a warranty extension, don't you think 12 years is pretty generous? Good lord man!

I've got OCD and the truck has a lot of sentimental value; What can I say?

Correct. I have a 2001 Tacoma with a 24 sq in hole (measured at the dealership) that was rejected by Toyota proper for a full frame replacement. So I am forced into the position to either purchase a frame or get a not-so-perfect repair on the current frame.

This hole got me aproved for a new frame back in 2018. Waited 2 1/2 months for parts and then a week for the swap. As you can see that hole meets the 10mm perforation requirement for approval.

    • Free Frame Inspections at authorized Toyota Dealers to determine whether your Subject Vehicle’s frame should be replaced and, if the Subject Vehicle is registered in Canada, the Subject Vehicle will also be evaluated for application of the Corrosion-Resistant Compounds (“CRC”)
    • If the frame meets the Rust Perforation Standard, which is a 10 millimeter or larger perforation on the Subject Vehicle, as further described in the Settlement Agreement’s Inspection Protocol, a replacement will be provided at no cost to you; or
    • If the frame does not meet the Rust Perforation Standard, CRC has not been previously applied and your frame has not been previously replaced, CRC will be applied at no cost to you. Toyota will send a reminder notice to the Class when there is only six (6) months remaining for the CRC.

My bet is they will do nothing for you. You have no visible holes (unless you make one ;)) and you've stated you already had the frame coated. Besides your frame will definitely last you that 5 years your hoping for and more.

A "24 square inch hole." Last time I checked, that was 4"x6". I don't think so.

Shutting off and restarting the truck remedied the problem (note the time on the clock)...
