I brought my 2015 Tacoma to the dealer to find out why both of my key fobs have only worked intermittently for the last two years. They changed the batteries and even tried a new key fob. Nothing worked and they were stumped. The only thing I replaced (not a genuine Toyota part) was a right rear taillight assembly that was broken by a forklift. I can't say if I noticed the fob problem at that same time.

A few days after the dealer tinkered with the truck, trying to solve the fob issue, the factory installed stereo suddenly has no base or much volume. It's all treble. I tried the balance settings and the tin sound is in all speakers so no blown speakers. I tried the treble and base settings and no solution there either. I call the dealer and they want to charge for diagnosis and are already talking about replacing the amplifier. They said they didn't mess with the stereo when checking the keyless entry system.
Who do I go to for a diagnosis for an honest answer?

I'd look at finding a dealer with a better service department.

Not sure how attached are you with the OEM keyless entry or radio but personally, the price you will pay for diagnostic is better spent on an aftermarket alarm along with an aftermarket stereo system. Its likely you may need a new keyless entry module, HU and or amp which is not worth replacing. The JBL stereo system with amp is nothing to brag about.

Time for a new system. As for the FOB issue, if it's aftermarket or "OEM" it would make a difference to the FORUM diagnosticians :D

Anyone have a good recommendation for an aftermarket unit?

Thank you for that wake up call. I was considering replacing the stereo unit, but was worried about the back up camera hook up and compatibility. Someone had suggested a Cobra alarm system that would replace the keyless system and more, but I really don't want more. I just want things to be simple at the best price. I guess I should find a car stereo installation business and see what products are compatible with the dash. I am pretty handy and hoped I could just replace the stereo with plug and play, but I don't think I can re-wire the back up camera which may be necessary. Any ideas?

For about $1k, I got backup camera added, better head unit, better speakers, coded alarm, tint. I’m very happy with it. Sounds amazingly clear and plenty loud. No more backing up by braille. Keyless entry. He added the camera, it replaces the license plate frame. You’d think it’s too low but it works perfectly.
