Who runs sandbags or similar during the winter? I have upcoming projects at Lake Tahoe this winter and was wondering if you guys throw weight in the light ass end to limit the use of 4wd. Prerunners feel free to chime in as well. Leave your winter driving tips. Smart ass comments always welcome as well.

I don't use sandbags. For weight, I use the ShurTrax water bladder.

Fill it up for 300 lbs evenly distributed in the bed. It freezes to become a hard bed floor. Doesn't slide around.

In the Spring, I just open the fill bung as it thaws it drains.

Instead of sand I used a high lift jack, chain, shovel, axe, x-bull tracks and a high lift kit so you have weight and a way to get you out

This almost made sense to me and then I wondered about pulling 300lbs of ice out if I needed the whole bed.

My thoughts as well. I have the Toyota bed separator and was thinking a tote and some sandbags, if I need to remove anything, it’s a quick process. Curious to see what others are doing.

I don’t live in the snow anymore, but when I did I drank Labatts. I had a 95 F150 I threw at least 4 bags back there oddly enough I wanted 6 and the hardware store wouldn’t sell them to me because they said it was too much weight for the truck?! Ducking old man that apparently knew everything. Then a week later someone stole 2 out anyways. I knew whom it was, I got revenge. In the end none of it mattered with the weak ass passenger tires on that thing.

When I touch snow I fight fire with fire and fill the bed with snow.

When I come back civilization I start a snow ball fight with confused people in an orange county mall.

Tire selection is more important. Get yourself something 3peak rated and forget about it.

My personal favorite is Mt Charleston just north of Vegas in the winter. All of the dumb shits come up there on lopro road tires and can't get up over the little hill at the lodge. Alot of tire spin and coming back down sideways. Then my dumbass putts up it with bed full of snow. Last time I was up there was in winter with 2nd gen prerunner.

First year I ran 6 inch thick slab of ice in the bed (snow, melt, snow, melt, snow melt). Made it useless, but it gave me traction. Second year I got a soft topper and just threw some sand bags in there.

How much weight are y’all tossing in the bed? Couple hundred pounds? Few hundred?

Check out my build thread (Beginning of Money Pit)
Instead of filling my bed with sand or products, I just shovel snow and hard pack half the bed full of it.

    Works every winter.

My truck has a cap, roughly 180 lbs. In fact every truck I've ever owned eventually had a cap on it. That along with it being a double cab adds enough weight to the rear axle. I've driven regular cab trucks with no weight on the back in snow and it wasn't fun.

I strap patio slabs down in my rear. I want 100lbs at least in a pickup truck rear.

Also make sure you guys favor the right, the gas tank is on the left and the right has much less weight on it.

We get black ice here in the PNW . I use a modified rubber horse mat. Super thick and heavy . Not sure what the weight is.

Black ice is a season in the Northeast. Winter tires and rims, studded tires, Quattro. No problems.
