Just bought a 2016 sr5 with some custom modifications, sweet truck with nice light setup, however I noticed the fog lights just went out after a week after I hooked up a towing light package. Checked the fuse box and there was not even a fuse where the fog light relay should be! Seems like the fog lights were running off of another source, I know relays aren’t that expensive but I’m not a mechanic and learning. Wondering if buying the relay fuse will do the trick. All other lights work fine. Thanks for any feedback!

Did the SR5 come with fog lights from factory or do you think they’ve been added? Is it an aftermarket switch?

It looks like they have been added. The fog lights are a white color when they were working. Was just strange when they had stopped working out of the blue, went to check the fuse box and the relay for front fog lamp was not even in place at all. Hoping that will make it work, relays are like 20$

If they were added the previous owner likely did not use a relay. The lights are probably wired into something else. If you don’t have the factory switch, you likely would not have the factory relay.

I would start tracing wires. Like most well-meaning truck modifiers, the previous owner probably did a hack job of the wiring. Automotive wiring is very hard to do right.

Well the last thing I did mess with were the raptor lights. I noticed one of the three weren’t working so I disconnected and put back together. Come to think that is when the fog lights stopped working because that was the last thing I did before they went out. But all I did was disconnect then reconnect the raptor lights (also noticed condensation within the raptors). Wouldn’t think that would trick the fogs. Like I said no mechanic or electrician here, trying to learn a thing or two from y’all! Thanks again!

I would trace the wires and look for a bad connection.

the style of splice that pierces the insulation are always suspect, as is anything the previous owner wrapped in tape. You may also find an in-line fuse that is blown.

This. Could be a t-tap splice on the headlight wiring for a relay so the fogs don’t come on w the hi beams, could be directly powered off the headlights, etc. possibly also tied into the raptor lights or whatever the tow light package got hooked up to. Could be a bad ground, many possibilities, Start tracing wire at the fogs & see what you find. Oh, & welcome to Tacoma World!

I could recall the wiring to an amp gauge the owner or someone did on a 66 gto i brought used. Every once in awhile the car would not start, and i'd smell something like plastic burning in the car. Finally i had nothing. I traced a bunch of wires under the dash that went to this amp gauge that looked cooked that was wired incorrectly. Whoever did it, to begin with used the wrong gauge wire being too small. Replace and re-ran those wires with much heavier gauge the way they should have been....never had the starting issue again.
