    Hello,

I have a 2021 OR with the compass in the rear view mirror. Since I bought the truck it hasn't read correctly. Is there a way to calibrate it?

    Thanks.

Yes. There are instructions in the OM. The biggest deal to be sure that it is set to the correct region.

Just curious, is it different from the center cluster compass?

The center cluster compass is most likely based on the GPS signal, but I do not know fo sho.

The earth's magnetic field is shifting due to the movement of the tectonic plates plus the dispersal of all the metal ores being mined and made into products. In a few years, North will be shifted to what is now East.

<edit> Sorry, North is shifting to what is now South.

True North and magnetic north aren't exactly the same. Depending on where you live you may be close enough to not matter, in other places you can be off significantly. You just have to know where you are and compensate. Where I live is only off by about 4 degrees, which isn't a huge deal. But when I travel to other parts of the USA it can be off significantly.

That flippy-floppy polar thing takes way longer than a few years, though I did read that the relative movement has accelerated over the last decades. My understanding is that it’s mostly the earth’s fluid ferrous core (or whatever it’s called) that is responsible for the magnetic field. Where did you read that our surface mining may be contributing to the effects?

I thought that may be the case, but our understanding of geomagnetism is so imperfect that it’s hard to know!

I don’t have a compass in my SR. Doesn’t anybody else use dead reckoning and the sun and shadows anymore?

The poles have been shifting for eons. There’s evidence based on old lava flow on the bottom of the ocean and judging by that evidence, we are overdue for a pole shift

Yes. Movement also varies across the US. For example, The Washington monument in DC moved northeast 28.8 meters between the years of 1927 and 1987, where as the dome on the state capitol in Sacramento (CA) moved 91.7 meters southwest. This is movement based on continental shift, not absolute location (coordinates).

Super easy to do in a new city on a cloudy day. /s

OPs truck's compass isn't working correctly. They weren't asking if your SR has one or if there is another way to navigate.

    The odd number interstates are north-south (e.g., I95). Even numbers are east-west (e.g., I70).

    Ha. I suppose.

It wasn't a reach for me to assume some old guy was complaining about the kids using a digital compass.

Turns out I'm the crotchety one. I'll log off and go watch Matlock.
