What Have You Done To Your 2nd Gen Tacoma Today?

That's the same grille I bought. I built a custom insert and emblem for it. Now about a year and a half later it's warping really badly. But damn that thing was inexpensive!

 

The funny thing about resale values is it can only be gotten once and to buy anything else longevity suffers.

I've had several lowered trucks in the past and the biggest reason why I lifted my current truck instead of lowering it is so I could see over the vehicles in front of me.

Nothing too ground breaking. I made a small change to the BirdDawg riser I have, I saw the failure modes where it cracked at the attachment point on the windshield. They all looked like over-exerted pressure at a lateral angle, basically the riser looked like it levered the glass laminate apart. So I added some VHB to the back of it so it exerts pressure more evenly across the surface area of the riser, holding the weight of the mirror. I also added a diamond and attached a GPS I'd previously given to my wife, that she no longer needs since her new Highlander has Navigation built-in.

 

I also added a RAM ball mount into my grab bar. I was going to use a long M6, but couldn't find one long enough. I was then just going to use one of the M8s it came with - but that meant drill out and installing a rivnut. So I started doing that process and ended up eating a drill bit. So instead I walked over, grabbed a tap, tapped it for a Helicoil since it was already drilled out bigger than M8, installed the Helicoil and then installed the damn mount.

 

I did the same thing in a way. Be careful of the weight you put on the risor and don't over tighten screw, you'll immediately regret it.



I use to hang a dash cam from there but I opted out from that mounting point when my new cam made it impossible.

 

Yea, I only put the set screw in just enough to lever the top against the glass so the VHB could set.

 

Replaced my brakes and rotors a week ago and they are still making a squeaky/grinding noise… somebody help me out here. I also just went and hit some trails and I could smell my brakes…

 

Replaced the 2 front CV axles.

Here there aren't Tacoma parts, so I bought the CV axles of the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 2020, and they fit perfect.

It may be interesting to know.....

 

Did you replace the retaining clips. If you reuse the old ones they can cause more noise. They are floating break pads so they need to have the retaining clips to keep tension.

 

I can say 4Runner and FJ Cruiser CV Axles fit in the Tacoma as well. Whats really interesting is the 1st gen FJ Cruisers(07-09) the inner spline count is different. So the axle still works and fits fine, but if you were to swap out the inner shaft for a longer one for a long travel setup, you may run into problems if you dont have the correct shaft.

CVJ rebuilds Toyota CV axles, but they have one part number regardless if you specify 1st Gen FJ cruiser, or Tacoma etc.. So I have always wondered how they handle that..

 

It's been quite a while since I've posted but since my last post I have added the 16x10 KMC KM522'S, universal bed rack, Hooke Road roof rack, Smittybilt XL tent, and a cheap Amazon awning. Also added some Harbor Freight ditch lights that are 2x brighter than the Caliraised lights were.

I've had the same set in my truck for a couple months now and I haven't had any sounds coming from them. I assume you used a decent amount of brake lube? If you used everything in the kit then there shouldn't be any issue. Some guys use a second retaining clip on them, that might help a little. But only thing I can think of is missing a clip or not enough lube.

 

I lubed up the pins and where the brake pads sit in…

 

Did the stupid brake in procedure also? I Replaced mine a week before going to Colorado and even after the brake in there were a couple times where I could smell the resin again. I wouldn't worry about that part, It should go away once a few millimeters of the pads ware off. I am not sure why it would still be squeaking though. I would try to take them apart again and look for where it is making the sounds. Should see some ware or some shiny spots where contact is being made. Then maybe more lube will help.
