    Hello,

I know I'm probably just overthinking this but wanted some opinions.

I bought my 2021 Tacoma a few weeks ago. It was a dealer trade so the salesperson drove about 160 miles back to the dealership the day I bought it. Most of that drive I would assume was highway. I was researching engine break in and it suggests not to drive at a constant speed for an extended amount of time. Would that 160 mile drive qualify for that? Since I bought it I have followed the break in recommendations to a T that are outlined in the owners manual. The truck is almost to 1000 miles now.

    Any input would be appreciated.

    Thank you.

Love your signature. If half of my customers read their owner's manuals, I might be out of a job. Might be... seems there's a new dumbass born every minute these days. Soon, we'll see one dumbass give birth to another on tiktok *cringe*

I was way to busy fixing real problems I didn’t have time to play baby sitter.
I had a cheat sheet and would walk out to service and I asked if they read the manual.
When they said no I’d tell them a page to read and walk away….

Roller camshaft engines basically need no break in. Variable speed for a few hundred miles is the best as the oil distribution patterns change with rpm. My dealer was a few miles away from me on the interstate and I drove it home using the frontage roads just to initially get those varying rpms. (Belts and suspenders).
Flat tappet engines reportedly need a constant speed break in at around 3000 rpm for 30 minutes. A highly experienced dyno operator on Engine Masters reported that he observed different levels of smoke coming from each of the exhaust headers depending on the rpm and now cycles the rpm between 2800 and 3200 on new engines during break in to vary the oil distribution.

This is what I'm worried didn't happen when the salesperson was driving it back to their dealership.

    Your fine.
I took mine on a trip of 200 miles with 35 on the odometer at 75mph.
    Don’t worry..

Variable speed can include hills, carrying RPMs, traffic, etc. Either way there are lots of different theories on break in procedure. I wouldn't sweat it, to be honest.

We’ve bought several vehicles that were driven from other dealerships and the most recent was over 200 miles away. Never had any problems. I drove 5 hours to get my current truck and drove it home. I’m sure your truck is fine. Your wallet may be in jeopardy if you stay on here too much, though!

They probably let it sit and idle for half an hour at the dealership. Burnout in the McDonald's drive-through. Damage is done. :boink:

Sorry OP , just hackin' on ya. :drunk:
I would bet they initially run these engines at the factory dyno which may be enough for some break-in. Engines and lubes are better than ever, I wouldn't sweat it.

I drove my 2020 tacoma 160 miles home from the dealer about 85% was interstate highway. I kept the speed under 70 mph for the most part. Except the transmission hunting, everything felt normal. I even towed about 2k lbs worth of chit with less than 500 miles on the odo. At 11k miles today its a fantastic truck.

Mine hit the ground running a daily 50 mile highway commute with 10 miles on the odo. That was 91k miles ago. Not a drop of makeup oil ever added in that time
