Have 250 k miles. The Manuel says 5w-20 but I was wondering as she's getting older, if I should bump up to a 5w-30 or 10w-30.

    What region?

10W30 is pretty much obsolete, 5W30 is the exact same but better in cold weather.

I thought the Tacoma was supposed to be bulletproof enough for that not to matter

My 2015 calls for 0w-20. Since I tow quite a bit I now use 0w-30. I’ve noticed that in other regions of the world the range of oil weights for the 2tr-fe are quite a bit more broad than here in the US.

I would use Valvoline high mileage full synthetic Maxlife. It's readily available in 5w or 10w30 in my area. If you have a Meijer near you they have it on sale right now.

@Plain Jane Taco I recently saw Valvoline has 150 k mile oil. Probably a hype but I don't think it will hurt spending the same or slightly more. Can I use 10w-30 on the 2.7?

You can use 10w30 without issue. Not sure how much benefit over the regular Maxlife (red bottle) there is. Both are synthetic blends. Valvoline also make Maxlife in a full synthetic (gray bottle).

Edit: Having looked at the specs that Valvoline provides....I would save a couple of bucks and get the regular Red Bottle Maxlife. I don't see enough difference to warrant any price difference. The Black Bottle has a tiny bit more cleaning agent, but the KV100 is 11 on both and the anti wear additives are about equal.

Bottom line? The Red Bottle is going to be the cheapest. But any of the 3 Maxlife formulas will serve you well.

I like when I see reports of Tacomas with over 200k miles. @GermanTickler - what engine do you have? I have several 10w-30 quarts I got a while ago for my Silverado.

@Stelcom66 It's the 2.7 access cab 4wd 5 speed Manuel 2009. Yeah I'd like to try 10w-30 after using 5w30 for 8k miles. Engine seems to be happier going to the 30 weight. I wanted to see if it burned less oil with the 10w30. I change the oil every 3 k. I'm amazed how well it runs. I call her sandy

    You're not gaining anything by using a 10w over a 5w.

Same as mine but 2 years newer. Good to know Sandy is running well at 250k miles! I think that's a great engine and transmission. Just got mine about a month ago. Is yours actually burning some oil? I guess that's not too unusual at that mileage.

@Stelcom66 Yes it does. Cars burn oil as they age. I had a Camry my parents gave me after high school and I just gave it away to a friend in need and it was clocked at 250k. my parents and I took very good care of it and changed it every 3 k miles but it did still burn oil. But long story short it ran just as good as the day they bought it.

@frp I've heard different. I think it's worth a try and observe between the two

Yes unfortunately it's typical at that kind of mileage to use some oil. Hopefully the viscosity change will help. As far as I know, the 2.7L engine isn't prone to using oil unlike some engines of other brands.

So you want less lubrication when your engine is cold? 10-4
