First of all, I have to say that I had posted previously that my Tacoma had lost all it’s power imposed by the t-sb-0090-20 after a month’s time. So I was desperate to say the least. I took it to the dealership, and they said that t-sb0090-20 was installed and that at the time there was nothing else they could do about it. So I took it upon myself to try premium 93 octane gasoline on it and after just one tank, I started noticing the truck come back to life! Needless to say, I am super happy again, but now it is hurting my pocketbook pretty bad. What can be done to program it to run on Regular gasoline? Any suggestions are welcomed.

Thats flat out weird. Just the opposite with that tsb that was originally done with mine before taking delivery of the truck. If i run premium it runs like crap. Even the tailpipe has a black sooty appearance inside. Its tuned to run well to run clean on 87.

I must say though that not all premium gasolines are made the same. Some have "double detergent" etc. I would chose just a plain 93 octane. I have tried other Premium octanes, and you are right it makes the truck run like crap. Maybe your technician did the T-sb update the correct way and mine didn't. I don't know. With these software updates one little mishap, and things can go terribly wrong. I wonder if the t-sb came with that option of choosing 87 or 93 octane like in the aftermarket ones that I hear are being installed. Notwithstanding, it is weird, but for now there is not enough people validating what I am saying to notify corporate and investigate further. At least I have found a way to keep mine running well for now.

The thing is the tune should not compromise performance no matter what the octane grade 87 or 93. At least you do recognize that gasoline does make a difference. In my case, like you said, it is the opposite. Toyota should investigate these kind of cases.

i noticed the ECU will advance the timing a lot more on 93 octane versus 87. i actually see negative timing values on 87 throughout the RPM range. The ECU takes a long time to adapt to the change in octane though. It can take a few tanks depending on how you drive. The ECU has to meet a certain set of parameters before it can finish the drive cycle evaluation.

I try to run shell gasoline as much as possible, mainly their E10 87. Every time i ran their v power premium 93 E10 it wasn't long before i notice the truck running worse with the transmission hunting every time their was a slight grade to climb. With E87 it pulls the same grade roads fine, even in 6th at 1200 rpm. The exhaust tip is also gone from black to a light orange/brownish color.

That is interesting. There should be little to no difference. I wonder if Toyota has looked into why it is doing this. I would be curious to know how the grade of combustion accelerated the timing.

Try Valero or Sunoco premium gasoline. Those are the ones I know work well. Like I said, I tried a different type of premium, and it crapped out my truck.
