Is it possible to change my . Key to a g key?

I have a 2010 Tacoma and want to know if it’s possible to reprogram my regular . Key to a g key

 

Pretty sure you would have to replace the key receiver in the truck. So no.

 

Interesting, I thought 2nd gen Tacos with immobilizer all used the G stamped key.

The receiver on the lock cylinder would be easy to change providing it's compatible but if the immobilizer module has to be changed Toyota likes to bury those up against the firewall behind the HVAC box so it's impossible to get to without removing everything so yea short answer is probably a no.

I'm curious what would be the advantage of having a G stamped key vs a dot key?

 

I was thinking Immobilizer module not the sensor at the ignition key.

I have no idea what or why anyone would want to change between dot and G or vice versa other than maybe they got one free or cheap. Either way it doesn't seem to be cost effective IMO.

 

I wanted a remote start that’s compatible with my stock and it’s only available for g keys
Plus there a conversation from a stock g key Tacoma key to a 4 runner key I wanted to do so I could have a one piece meso key

 

Tacomas use a • key up to June, 2010 and a G key from June, 2010 onwards.

As far as changing the type of key, it is the immobilizer ECU you would need to change, and it is jammed up against the firewall. Part number is 89780-04020, master key is

$35 89785-08040 2010 Toyota "G" Chip Master Transponder Key (Factory Original - NEW)

89785-08040, sub key is 89786-08040.

Just a side note for those that need a replacement transponder master key and programming, I bought a replacement key with programming at my local Ace hardware for $85. Much cheaper route than dealer.
