Any ideas why this code was thrown?

Hi guys, 2011 Prerunner check engine light came on today. Before I go farther, I know some people are “okay” with check engine lights as long as they’re not anything major. I’m not.

That being said, I don’t think this is major. Truck never did anything weird, light just came on. I would however like to know where to start and if anyone has had the same code before I go chasing. I just reset the code and tightened gas cap, I’m not sure if that could’ve been it or not as I’m not sure what code that would throw. I guess we’ll know if the light doesn’t come back on. Gas cap did click once when I tightened it, so it could’ve been a little loose.

For anyone wondering, I’m not okay with check engine lights for one simple reason. If I have an issue that needs to be addressed quickly, I want the light to come on. Don’t want a “very small leak” to keep me from knowing about a real problem. Thanks for any help guys!

Yup. Go make sure your gas cap is on until it clicks.

A few additions to make me feel cool.
I would replace the cap and reset. If it comes back then go further but most likely it’s the cap.

I mean it’s a 12 year old cap. They cost about $12 but you do you.

Did this and reset it, thanks!
Gas cap was actually replaced about a year ago with an oem gas cap after I left my old one on the tire at a gas station. Cap should be fine, maybe I just didn’t click it when I got gas last. Thanks!
Will clean the gasket at the least, thanks!

I might have jumped that conclusion too fast. My wife never quite shut a door, drawer, cap, or anything. Her CRV does this all the time since new and it’s always a lose gas cap.

All good brother, just relieved to hear that’s likely what it was. My girlfriend of 3 years has a crv and she loves it. It has however gone a little crazy a couple times with light flashing all over the dash due to “updates” or something. Sounds fishy to me but it’s under warranty and they’ve fixed it free both times. How does your wife like hers?

Loves hers. It’s a 2013 with only 43k miles. Never had any mechanical issues except 2 batteries and a set of tires.

Hopefully just a gas cap, will keep this in mind if it comes up again. Is that a pretty common occurrence for a 2011 though? I know it’s an oldish truck but it isn’t THAT old lol

While it is probably is a leak.
It might not be a leak. - https://www.tsbsearch.com/Toyota/T-SB-0080-12

    - It’s probably a leak from one of the below -

    • Fuel tank cap (loose)
    • Leakage from EVAP
    line (Canister - Fuel
    tank)
    • Leakage from EVAP
    line (Purge VSV -
    Canister)
    • Leakage from pump
    module
    • Leakage from fuel
    tank
    • Leakage from canister

FWIW, this can be a time consuming process to diagnose.
To see how the operation works, Google - “1gr-fe p0456”

Put some grease on the gas cap gasket, re-seat the gas cap, clear the code and wait n see if it comes back.

Cost, 5c of grease and 2 min of time.

Thanks for this, I’ll keep this handy in case the code comes back. Really hoping it was just my gas cap. I always turn it until it clicks once like it says, but maybe this time I just got lazy with it. It clicked when I tightened it then reset it, so hoping for the best.
