Engine shut off while driving

While coasting in neutral, there's no load on the engine, so the computer is likely trying to feed as little fuel as it can to keep it running/turning. Probably a couple of ill timed burps in that feeding and you stalled.

I get the desire to put in neutral while going downhill, it just seems to "feel" better. It does use more fuel relative to keeping it in gear and foot off the throttle, but I could see how increased RPMs while you're trying to be in stealth mode could be annoying to the experience. Not as annoying reading whines about threads going off topic, but annoying nonetheless.

Deceleration down hill, the engine shuts off the fuel injector to produce compression braking. Putting the transmission in neutral makes the engine try to idle, burning fuel.

It also isn't uncommon for clutches to explode from overspeed when trying to re-engage the tranny and getting the wrong gear in a rush. Not something I would do on a hill. I hold a gear or drop a gear as necessary but never put it into neutral.

 

Coasting in neutral does not save fuel. On modern vehicles going back years now, the ECU cuts fuel to the injectors when you're off the accelerator...helps auto manufacturers meet federal emissions requirements for vehicles.

Going in a lower gear instead both saves your brakes and also doesn't hurt fuel economy if you're off the accelerator. Much safer too, don't have to suddenly go back into gear in an emergency maneuver.

 

I don't disagree with you and think that DFCO is a cool thing.

That said, there is a small overlap where engine braking in DFCO is too much and some throttle is needed to maintain speed. I've done the neutral coast a couple times.

On the safety side, it is really no different. The brakes are still there at full assist. This is not about manually turning the engine Off, which is a thing for some folks also.


Regardless on an MT, the engine should not die when coasting in neutral.

 

yeah I agree the engine should not die, that is weird...I don't know about all the new tech in the newer trucks but that can't be normal.

Technically if you're taking a driving test they'll fail you for coasting in neutral but I know we're all well past needing to take a drivers test lol. I just can't imagine doing that and having to ride the brakes more often for the most part.

Turning the engine off while coasting....if someone did that with me riding in the vehicle I'd commandeer it from them, wtf

 

Does the engine die and all the warnings come up as if you ‘stalled’ or does the engine shut off and all accessories still functioning?

Is this push to start ignition or keyed?

Strange, it kind of makes sense if the truck had an auto-off function like other manufacturers so they can get the added fuel economy of not running at a stop light but how would that work with a Manual transmission?

 

2017 M/T long down hill on drive home, do it almost every day. No shut off, no problem. If my torque converter blows up on my manual transmission truck, well I just wasn't meant to have one, and I will carry on without it.

 

That is the truth. I have always been a fan of 10yr retests. Maybe less for motorcycles. And, I kinda miss annual vehicle inspections from growing up in PA. Of course, there are negatives with that, but . . .

I've only done this a few times out of curiosity. It is only at a point where no brakes are required.

That said, the way that most every AT is operated, folk do ride the brakes for extended periods. I typically shift ATs, so there's that.

It used to be called Polish Overdrive. Might have tried it in my youth, but yeah, not quite good operation.

All 3rd Gen MTs have old school keys.

 

Lol the fuel shuts off in gear because the wheels are turning the engine.

 

Your torque converter is your clutch, which I guess you could blow up and that also wouldn't be pretty. Somewhere on here there's a build thread with photos of a guy with a turbo first gen that blew up his flywheel under boost and it almost tore through the bottom of the cab. Destroyed the bell housing of the trans. He was pushing crazy PSI on the stock clutch though.

OP, I would call Toyota customer service and open a case with them. If they don't respond as expected, I would also open a case with the NTHSA. I don't have to tell you but pretty dangerous when the engine just quits at a high rate of speed. FWIW, my 18 MT has never done that.

 

Technically illegal in some areas because it burns your brakes. Keep it in gear, man.

I've owned plenty of manual cars, sometimes people just don't want to downshift. Who cares! Some could even make the argument that someone may prefer to use the brakes rather then wearing out the clutch with constant downshifts.

 

Tell me one place where its illegal to coast in gear with a manual transmission.

 

It was (maybe still is) illegal to perform oral sex in PA?
