How is your state with taxes/vehicle taxes?

I live in West Virginia. On top of yearly vehicle inspection ($13 unless lifted then +$) we have to pay a yearly tax on the vehicle's value. So, when I purchased my 09 I had to pay 6% sales tax on the low book value (approx $14k)... And, now I'll have to pay 3% of the vehicles value every year I own it. I do not have a loan on it, I own it outright. But, if I own it for the next 25 years, I'll pay that 3% every year on whatever it's valued at during that year.

This annoys me to no end. When my kid graduates (11yrs from now) I am getting the fuck out of here. So, how is your state on taxes on your vehicle?

This isn't the only reason I want to get out... but, having a terrible economy and low paying jobs with being taxed to death... it's enough for me to be sick of it.

Pay state sales tax one time.

Then the yearly registration has a graduated rate depending on the age of the vehicle.

My '81 Honda CX500C motorcycle has annual registration cost of $11. IIRC, my '06 Tacoma is about $150.

We also have to pay the yearly registration ($50-$60 fixed rate for all vehicles unless wanting a different style license plate). But, to be able to do that you have to have your tax receipt first. I also pay taxes on the home yearly but I don't think that's different from other places.

    What state, Knute?

Sorry, we don't pay a "vehicle tax" each year, just the registration.

Property tax on the home is common everywhere I have lived.

    Iowa.

Let me toss a small brag about this state. Many wind farms have been erected over the last few years. Now, the electric that is generated by wind farms accounts for 57% of the electric in this state. Fall is approaching, many bushels of grain will be in bins getting dried by electric heat.

States vehicle sales tax of 6.5% when selling private party, but that's about it besides yearly registration which is less than $75 for me. No emissions, no vehicle inspections.

We pay state sales tax on the initial purchase, then registration fees annually, inspection fee annually and excise tax which varies by town. They seem to devalue the vehicle for excise tax and it drops pretty quick, but the first bill when you get a new or newer vehicle is tough to swallow. I don't recall the tax rate, but I pay $5/yr for the motorcycle, around $125/yr for the camper and $400 for the car and $450 for the truck (those are both down from the mid $600's when we first bought them). So yeah... gets old especially since it's not based on anything except the fact you own the vehicle.

That sucks big time. Here tax is paid on the purchase when a vehicle is bought/sold, and that is it. The tax is 12% provincial tax. It used to be only 7% on private sale used vehicles, but the Gubmint changed that 10 years ago.

They get you one way or the other. Brother in law lives in Nevada and was bragging about how they have no state income tax. Asked him about his property and car registration taxes . My state has income tax, but the other taxes are lower. In the end our tax bills were about the same. Eleven years is a long time, but before you move look at all the taxes you pay.

Sales tax on purchase then the yearly registration of 60$
Indiana taxes the same as West Virginia.
Lots of people look at state income taxs but fail to take into account property and sales taxs.
Personally I love Ohio and consider it a unknown heaven, SHH don't spread it around

    Unless its a lease.

    Texas has wonky vehicle taxes.

Sales tax is due at time of purchase or lease. If you purchase, thats the end of it, aside from registration.

For leased vehicles only - annual prop tax. For mine it was ~150. (Unless your city specifically opts out of the tax. Fort Worth opts out, Hurst does not. Makes this little nugget of info an unpleasant surprise for a few people)

Then annual registration: 65-75 depending on county add-ons.

    • Sales tax payment when vehicle is purchased. 6-7% based on county. One time only.
    • Annual registration is approx $40 per vehicle. Motorcycles are cheaper. Custom plates are another $20-30.
    • No annual vehicle inspections.
    • No smog or emissions checks.
    • No front plate.
    Sorry, were full too.

In California you pay the prevailing sales tax rate in the county/city where you bought your car then a yearly registration fee that is based on the purchase price but one which goes down a bit every year. My '18 Tacoma is around $500 right now but my '88 911 which is worth far more is only around $150.

Something else to consider is whether you pay the sales tax on the net purchase price (new vehicle price less trade in) or just the new vehicle price. That's treated differently state to state.

Here's the current Washington break down, although it changes every year. Some times it's$40 and other times $500, on top of whatever sales tax it is when purchasing (6.8%)

They are all a bit different, but they generally all add up to a substantial amount.

What matters in evaluating something like this is how you earn your $, spend your $ and live with your $ (housing/real estate, etc)

Living in a no income tax state works well for me. How consumer goods are taxed is secondary, as I have control over certain choices with disposable income, and in this state groceries are not taxed, nor are professional services (medical, attorneys, etc). While real estate taxes can vary greatly by county and zoning of the property, we do have a 'save our homes' cap on how much tax can rise in a year, regardless of valuation. And it's portable between primary residences.

That said, be careful you don't jump out of the proverbial frying pan.................

And why wait 11 years till graduation? He's in first grade and can easily adjust to a relocation at that young age.

Your first mistake was living in King County haha. It's all tons cheaper if you're anywhere else because there's no county associated fees, just the base WA fees.
