Hi folks. Some really good friends of mine just broke down in Colorado in their 2002 Chevy. Anyone have a 2002 Chevy 2500hd. LB7. Allison 1000 series transmission? Apparently there is a whole in the case. They are on their retirement trip.

Location NW of Denver. Estes park.

current wait is 1 week and $6k!!!

Did they call a dedicated transmission shop? That's a pretty common rebuild for them.

Yes amcco and others, no one has a rebuild in stock, even on the west coast. Minimum 1 week at this point.

Edit: apparently D&w diesel on the west coast has a location in Denver, on the phone with them tomorrow to see if there’s any reprieve.

No usable core is probably the reason for the huge estimate...That would be the first generation Allison which was a five speed which I believe was used up till 2005. 2006 and after I had an additional gear… Anyway here’s the name of the largest Duramax recycling yard in the country. Might not save him time or money but it might be worth a call.

Thanks everyone, contacting a few of these vendors today.

Those vendors with “built” transmission are still $4900 (if they are in stock) for their lowest level not to mention install. I guess $6,000 might be the number it comes out to be.

You're in the ball park. I priced out an ATS rebuild and it comes to about $5200 shipped. The core charge is $1800 of that.

Had my 2003 Duramax trans built a few years ago, took it to a local shop and it was $4,800 and they had it for 2 months.

    Ouch.

Update: Towed to shop this morning, transmission is fine as of right now, the transfer case threw something through the case. Looks like $1500-1800 right now. Hopefully the transfer case didn’t send metal back into the transmission too.

Transfer case uses a separate oil on those, it shouldn't have contaminated the trans

Those transfer cases were bad about pump rub and putting a hole in the side and dumping all the fluid, there is a kit to fix it if you catch it in time.

Good to know, I’ll have to find the kit for that, or tell them to put it in too!

I had to install it on mine at 145,000 miles, already had a small hole in it.

Was going into limp mode when towing when it down shifted from OD to D. Only time it would do it was pulling something, I drove it hard when I test drove it and it didn't happen. It was an expensive lesson. They said once it slips, it doesn't get any better. It's good to 700 HP now :D

Total bummer. You shouldn’t need another one anytime soon.
