Work has me going to Salem once a week. Shitty commute, first time I was scheduled to be here at 9 am and what a shit show traffic was at that hour. Tried to schedule 7:30 arrival this week but apparently owners don’t get out of bed that early so, rather than sit in traffic for another 9 am arrival, I got here early and found a diner for breakfast. I went to Red’s this morning, awesome service, good food and damn quick! If any of you know any other places I should visit for breakfast in Salem, please let me know. They have to be open before 8 though, that ruled a lot of places out.

 I was doing the same thing. MA or NH?

Sammy's is good - are they open weekdays? They always had some weird hours when I was in the area. In the same place as the ice cream place there.

Mary-Ann's is decent but they owe a lot of their success in Salem to their location. Decent enough but there are better. That area wasn't always the best for breakfast spots, they kind of lacked that.

Hey all, hoping I can get some travel recommendations from this thread!

My girlfriend and I are planning a trip from Bethlehem PA to Acadia National Park from 11/8 to 11/14. I'm trying to plan a relatively scenic route on the way there and back to avoid the commotion of the larger cities (NYC, Boston), and make some cool stops along the way. We'll book a few airbnb's during the course, but are not opposed to truck camping to fill the gaps. Mainly interested in hiking, camping, good beer, small towns, and checking out the coast!

So far I'm thinking of heading north through NY, CT, MA to Portland ME. Likely spend a day/night here. Then continue north to Acadia for some hiking/camping, and spend a few nights in Bar Harbor, ME. On the way back, head west to VT to check out the White Mountains and Mount Washington. We'd head south from there en route back to PA.

I'm not at all locked in to this plan and am very open to recommendations, must see's, and must do's. I think the route will look something like this but may change!

Where's your NY portion take you? Looks like through the Bear Mtn area. If so, be sure to drive the "goat trail" and hike Breakneck if you're into hiking (somewhat difficult, at that). If you go through CT definitely take the Merritt if you can. Probably post-foliage by then but still much better than any of the other CT highway/parkway routes for scenery. 84 from Hartford to MA is alright but can be horrible on the front of traffic.

White Mountains are amazing, try to do Mt Washington if you can and if you want to wheel check out Jericho Mtn. Scenery up there is spectacular.

I wouldn't bother with Hartford or going up 91 through MA. The drive up through NY state is much nicer, then you can cut over 2 to get to 91 again.

Ignore the miles and hours here, I have a few loops and back and forth stuff adding quite a bit to it. It's hard to drag the route around without creating those.

If you do go through CT, the drive from Kent up to the MA line is nice:

Yup, 22 will be way more enjoyable than 91 through Hartford.

Then you can hop over to travel 2 through Western MA. The stretch from North Adams through Charlemont is a great driving road. Once you get past Greenfield, 2 isn't as interesting so it'd be worth getting on 91 there.

The only change I'd give is on the way back down or up go through southern NH - and after portland, take the coastal route

    upload_2021-9-24_10-36-35.jpg

NOPE more I lied - could also do the blue one, decent enough route, and the intent here with my blue line was to hit Newburyport MA/Portsmouth NH

    upload_2021-9-24_10-38-26.jpg

Edit again - my recommendation on road trips is loop rather than double back.

In July 2020 I went from Providence down to Texas and back with a road trip, the ONLY overlap of routes was about 3 miles of 195 from my house down to 95, which I took out to upstate new york and then out to MI down to Texas, home via going east along the south and then up the coast and through CT home. Long of the shot - 7500 miles and zero double back

Ditto on "see two different routes" rather than just backtrack south after the turnaround point. You get two fully different experiences on the coastal route vs the inland route.

Shit, sorry I forgot there were 2…. Talking about Salem, MA.

Completely unrelated news, I saw a Jeep on the highway with a cap that made it look like an old Land Rover. It had clasps on the side like it would expand. Never seen anything like that before but it looked pretty neat.
