Has anyone installed a power/remote tailgate lock? Where do you get the power? It is worth the effort? I have a hard bed cover that is lockable s locking the tailgate is necessary.

I installed the Pop & Lock and absolutely think it was worth it. Took less than 90 mins. I ran the power from the passenger side (instead of driver, so that it only unlocks on the 2nd fob press). There are lots of videos on YT to help with install.

I’ll second the recommendation for the OEM unit. You’ve got a pretty new truck, so I’d keep it OEM if I could.

Installation wasn’t difficult at all, and given it is an OEM part, everything fits as it should.

I think the most difficult part was running the cable under the truck (which really wasn’t that difficult).

I bought off Amazon, ran my own wire and made a bracket. If you can do that, it is cheaper. You can't beat OEM though.20200229_152758.jpg

OEM. Your time is probably worth more than any cost savings you would get by trying to DIY.

Don't get me wrong - I LOVE to DIY and do my own wrenching. I also know the value of my own time and calculate accordingly unless it's something I really want to do myself or really enjoy.

Many people have done this. There are a couple ways to do it, with a lot depending on how and WHEN you want the tailgate to unlock/lock. The official way to connect it as defined by Toyota, is to connect it to the left side of the vehicle, so that whenever you lock/unlock the driver door, it also locks/unlocks the tailgate. [I will upload the official Toyota directions with this post as well, for those who are interested] If that sounds like too much, then the other way is to connect it to the right side of the truck, so that the tailgate only unlocks/locks whenever you unlock all doors of the truck, including passenger door. BUT, for me, even THAT was way too many times to lock/unlock the tailgate, when I rarely need to go in there. SO, PopNLock actually makes a SWITCH that you can mount on or underneath your dash, so the tailgate is only locked/unlocked when you hit the switch! For me, that made the most sense. Now if I was a contractor and always needed my tailgate unlocked as soon as I got out of the truck, then connecting it officially as Toyota says, would make sense. In any case, I documented how I connected mine with the switch, and it looks totally like it came from the factory that way! Here is the link to my video:

When I first got my truck I said eh, I don't need to spend the $$ so that I don't have to turn a key. That got old fast. I got the OEM kit and gladly paid the tech that I trust at my dealer the hour labor to put it in. I'm too old and fat to be crawling around under my truck running cable. One of the best upgrades I've made and no warranty worries.

I installed the oem one in my 2020 dlcb. I was going to get the pop n lock also, but with more research I found the oem unit and went with that.

I second Amazon and a 45 minute install………unless of course you don’t have 45 minutes to DIY you could spend lots more money and time at your favorite dealer…….. it’s an easy DIY install

Very worth it if you have a locking tonneau cover. The wiring was a bit tedious to get thru the firewall and zip tie up but not too bad.

I guess it depends what you consider lots. I ordered the OEM kit myself online (was a lot cheaper than letting my dealer get it), dropped the truck at the dealer in the morning, picked it up after work. $138 later it was done. I watched the install videos and most likely could have done it myself, but for that price it was worth it for me not to. Some people enjoy wrenching and that's great. For me not so much, but I do like the end result. To each their own. I'm lucky enough at this stage of my life to have the means to decide which jobs I can and/or want to do, and which ones I leave to the pros.

One bit of advice I can give if you do the DIY route... when running the wire think about the future and run a few extra. I ran a couple 10gauge and some 12 gauge in a bundle. The less you have to run wire for future projects the better.

Yup! pop n lock is really loud. Been meaning to wrap the assembly in some sound deadening material.
