I’ve got a 2019 Tacoma TRD Sport with a long box. I’m looking for a “trifold style” tonneau cover that can accompany an over box tent. I need to able to retain use of the tonneau cover, fold up and down, while the tent is in place. I live in northern Canada so freezing, thawing, snow and ice are very much so a concern for 6-8 months of the year. Having a VERY secure box is really important so a soft cover tonneau just won’t cut it. Has anybody seen anything out there?? I want to avoid putting the tent on the roof if possible. Thanks!

Do you have a rack for your tent?

I don’t have a rack, tent or tonneau yet so I’ve got lots of options.

I just put on a retrax and uptop overland bed rack this weekend. Not a trifold but a retractable cover. Not sure any trifolds work with a bed rack that I know of. Going to mount my tent tomorrow. Still have full bed cover opening and closing. Only bummer is the tonneau has a canister for where it retracts and you lose a little bed space.

If you want to be able to open a trifold or similar, I’d imagine you’ll need a pretty tall rack. Kbvoodoo has a few different heights you can run with tonneau brackets. Other options also, like Billie bars I’ve heard good things about, but don’t allow you to open your tonneau with tent installed

This is a good option also. I think trifold will be an issue with most racks.

I’ve seen it done with roll ups. I could be wrong but I don’t think it would be possible with a hard tri fold unless you get the tallest squarest rack of all time.

Maybe a short bed rack up front would allow the 1st panel to flip open? But I think you are right, outside an over soft topper rack being used with a tonneau, I’m not sure I’ve seen one tall enough that doesn’t taper too much for it to work.

Bed rack companies have been making a tonneau adapter bracket which is essentially a 2-4” opening for a tonneau to maneuver. Trifold obviously fold much higher than a few inches. I did a bunch of research and a retrax/uptop seemed to be my best option.

Thanks guys, been chatting some suppliers in the area and they’ve told me that the retrax is a bad option for my climate. Lots of snowfall and ice locks the cover in place and it can’t be open or closed. Might have to bite the bullet and put a cap on instead of the box cover.
