Overfilled gas.. twice.

So I just picked up my new 21’ TRDOR on Saturday. After a lengthy drive home from the dealer I stopped to fill up. I made sure to insert the gas pump nozzle fully (all the way up to the rubber “skirt”) and let it fill up while I wiped the windshield down.

After the pump “clicked” it still continuued dribbling out a small amount of gas that ended up overflowing all over the side of my truck, I was pretty annoyed but just chalked it up to a faulty pump.

Well, I went to top off the tank again today at a different pump and to my surprise the exact same thing happened AGAIN. Am I just being a bonehead/idiot and missing something obvious here?

I’ve never had this problem with my 18’ Silverado that had a “capless” gas port.

Also, both times I immediately went home and thoroughly hosed off the side of my truck and tried to rinse up under the inside of the left rear wheel well. Is there anything else I should do to ensure it’s completely clean? I’ve heard gas can wreak havoc on paint..

Don't have that issue and I don't have answers for you, but in 5 years I have spilt gas on my truck a time or 10 and it still looks the same as the rest of the truck. Should you clean it? Probably. Does it eat the paint if you don't? Hasn't on mine.

Just trying to offer some comfort in these trying times.

 

I would venture to say you have a vent issue. My 21 doesn’t do this at all…but the gas pumps we have in the mid West are archaic.

That does make me feel better in a way. I’m sure you can imagine the frustration felt when dumping gas all over the side of a brand new, unwaxed $40k vehicle after only owning it less than 2 hours..

 

Once the pump clicks off, remove pump handle from the truck's filler spout.

 

Maybe dribbling is an inaccurate description. Best I can tell is that both times I audibly heard the pump “click” and shut off, the what followed was a faint sound of a coke bottle being filled up to the brim.. then you guessed it, gas spewing out of the filler spout and down the side of my truck.

 

Sure can. My truck is old and well used and I still wouldn't like it.

 

Jesus. Just knock the spout around on the hole a bit before fully removing it to get the dribbles out. If you get gas on you paint clean it or don’t. I hope you are still in high school.

 

I think you missed the point. The pumps did not fully shut off in time and the gas overfilled.. it wasn’t a simple case of “knocking off the last few dribbles”. But thank you for your constructive input good sir.

 

What do you mean by “top off”?
Once the pump clicks off, don’t try to add more fuel. Also, remove the nozzle half way and let it set for about 3 secs. Then remove the nozzle.

 

It literally happens so fast after it clicks that I don’t think that would matter unfortunately. I suppose I can just manually fill my tank and just listen for the tank to get near full, but seems a bit silly to have to do on a brand new vehicle (which I do love nonetheless)

Wait.. I remember one night when my wife came home, smelled like she was with an oil rig dude. She managed to spill all over herself and half of the car. Killed that new car smell.

 

It’s a 21’ that I just picked up on Saturday, I thought that recall was only for the 18-19’s? I could very well be wrong though..

I don't think there is a problem with the Tacoma; there is a problem with the auto fuel flip lever on the pump handle that likely still keeps the pump partially open and I bet you are getting the gas that is left in the pump's hose after the pump shuts off. So finish pumping fuel by manually controlling the pump handle and not using auto fill for the entire tank fill up.

In B.C. the pump handle auto flip levers are illegal and all gas is pumped by hand. The overfill problem as described above is probably the reason for the law. They also want you right there on hand in case the pump auto shut off fails.

 

I would think the vent hose is either clogged or pinched somewhere. Probably best to just contact the dealer. Someone here should be able to help with more constructive advice. You have every reason to be upset. Regards Scott
