How long before the Taco goes turbo...

This has most likely been discussed here before, I searched ....nada. Anywho...Anyone else feel that with the Tundras changing from a n/a V8 to a turbo V6 mostly for milage requirements..a turbo 6 & 4cyl is already in the works for future Tacos ?? I think turbos are great on a car or truck till it needs servicing $$$$$ also there's reliability differences. Then I'm cool with naturally aspirated motors.

 

My guess would be we'll see a hybrid or plug in Tacoma before we see a turbo.

 

The hybrid will be out for 2025. It’s has 335hp. There currently is no turbo in the works.

 

Rumor has it that the Lexus 2.4 turbo that is new for 2022 will make it into the 2024 Tacoma

Turbos are great if you don't keep the vehicle for longer than say 5 or 6 years. The maintenance and repair costs are very expensive if you plan on keeping it for much longer. Or taking the chance when buying one second hand, and hoping that the previous owner was exemplary with their maintenance schedule.
Mote complexity, more to go wrong and drain your wallet.

I agree with this as I've also see something to suggest this. They will probably offer a turbo version as well as a turbo with hybrid. Just like in the tundra.

 

I owned a 1987 4cyl 4x4 factory turbo. I had it for 12 yrs with no problem.

 

I keep reading the next Gen 4runner will be the 2.4L Turbo with optional trims including a PHEV. I'd assume the Tacoma would be the same? Unless they keep the 3.5L v6 and just tweak it.

 

The only reason for a turbo is to meet EPA and corporate fuel mileage. In real life, I suspect fuel mileage is no better and even worst than the non-turbo, because people like the feel of the extra power. I believe Toyota was smart in waiting to turbo the Tundra.

 

How many total miles did you put on her ?

 

While I do think the Tundra 5.7 is a King among trucks durability wise.. the last 4 years it was a complete dog when in came to fuel mileage 14-16mpg. You had to pick between the big American 3 with advertised mileage between 18-23 mpg 23* for Ram for better mpgs. But in order to achieve that the motors come with cyl deactivation and other electro mechanical wizardry that's prone to fail. And that's what Toyota did right they let the 5.7 V8 be a V8. No techno gizmos to complicate it this is why there very reliable given proper maintenance. I believe Toyota Tundra was forced to achieve better mpgs for two reasons one per epa & two because the big 3 competition. Sadly I truly believe the gasoline turbos will not be as reliable or long living as the last 5.7 or 4.8 V8s their replacing. (500k-1mil miles)

even with that they may outlive the Ecoboost ,Chevy or Dodge V8s.

 

I for one hope the current 3.5 is gone. Although a good engine, it is a poor truck engine. The stroke is too short and therefore doesn't have the bottom end for a truck. The new V35A if they made a naturally aspirated version may be better. It has a longer stroke and is a very efficient motor. For me it makes sense to have this motor as well as a 2.4L turbo and/or a turbo w/hybrid.

 

Never. Toyota is preparing an EV truck. I suspect it'll be a Tacoma.
