…owners manual and AMSOIL both say the transmission holds 12 quarts. But when the mechanic dropped the pan / replaced the filter it only needed 1 gallon. What’s up with the other 8 quarts?

Torque converter, lines, cooler, trans components.

You can't drain a transmission without removing it. So a pan drop is as good as it gets.

12 is a tad much though, I would say 6 or 7 is all it can take empty.

12 Quarts is total dry fill, dropping the pan will only get 1/3-1/2 of the fluid out, the rest stays in the torque converter, valve body, and clutch packs.

Like stated the whole system is ~11-12 quarts, a pan drop/drain gets you roughly 3ish. To do it properly you must drain the pan, replenish, then disconnect the trans cooler line at the proper spot to capture old fluid at about 2 quarts at a time, as you replenish the same amount to the pan to pump all the old stuff out.

There is a whole sticky DIY on this that explains it all. But yes your trans holds 11-12 quarts. If your mechanic doesnt know this (every automatic trans is like this where a pan drain isnt nearly all of the fluid) then get a new mechanic.

Is this the DIY you are referring to?
