Mine does the same thing. The hill start assist is non existent but it is allegedly a feature. The lights flashing are traction light indicator and warning symbol so I think what you experienced is normal and expected based on my experience. That said, it’s annoying and very startling the first time you see it.

Odd most other vehicles silently hold their position in hill start assist. Not sure what the heck Toyota was thinking here, it seems counter intuitive to me, but perhaps I just don’t understand what the truck is doing.

I have a steep driveway and my 3rd gen would do this ALL the time. It's "normal" for this truck. Super annoying, but I don't think it will harm anything.

I didn’t think all models got Hill Start Assist. I’ve tested it on my limited and it works fine, but having driven stick cars most of my life, don’t let the truck roll back normally.

This is in the manual. It is so you don’t roll back the brakes activated.

It is Hill Assist like most said. It comes on any of the 3rd gens with the MTS and Crawl Control because it requires the different brake booster.

I have heard and believe that Toyota's intention was to prevent people from having trouble when stopped on a slippery hill. If you left off the gas and drifted backwards slightly, and then gave it all the beans, you'd slide out the rear. With this Hill Assist the ABS babies you and stops you from drifting back, but really doesn't give you full power until you're moving.

What is for certain though is this is normal operation and just a different way of doing a Hill Assist.

    Simple Steep Hill Solution.

Left foot on brake pedal, push.
    Right foot on throttle pedal.
At the same time, push with the right foot, lift the left foot.

Same type of process works with 3 pedals. Note: a gear must be selected. "N" means NO Gear.
Left foot on left pedal, Push.
Right hand on e-brake handle, Pull
    Right foot on throttle.
At the same time, slow lift left foot, push with right foot, release e-brake with right hand.

Basic driving technique. Learn to handle the vehicle without the nanny gadgets. Remember, gadgets fail, then watcha gonna do???

    A few.
Hill Start Assist as others have stated. Mine has only done it maybe a handful of times over the 2 1/2 years Ive owned it. Really dont understand it myself since situations where it has activated in the past Ive been in the same spot many times since then and it hasnt activated. Maybe the computer learns that also

My 2020 DCSB OR use to do that all the time. Hills didn't have to be steep for it to do it either. It would roll back a good bit before the brakes caught it. The dash would start beeping then it felt like to me like crawl control was kicking in as the truck was trying to catch itself. I took it into my local Toyota dealership to document it. They said it was totally normal. Seems like I remember reading at one point where people were trying to file a lawsuit because of this. Honestly it was never really that big of a issue to me. I now have a 2021 DCLB OR and it hasn't rolled back once.

It’s annoying AF that’s all I know. Mine goes off on the slightest of grades. The dumpster to my place is on a gradual incline and every time it goes off as the truck rolls back slightly. One time it went off as I went to take off into the street into traffic because it was on a slight bump. Yeah Toyota, that’s a safe feature! It’s one of my biggest pet peeves with this truck other than my seatbelt frequently not wanting to come out and constantly locking up.

When you come to a stop on a steep hill pull the hand brake.
Keep the hand brake pulled as you transition your foot from the brake to the gas.
As you start to press the gas pedal start to release the hand brake.

You'll get the feel for how much gas / how much brake pretty quickly.

This is correct, I have a very steep driveway and get the same thing nearly every time if I try to stop and start again on the driveway.

Definitely your traction control and your abs kicking in . My OR does that on steep hills also . The noises , the lights , the whole thing. Its not your transmission making noise at all, definitely the ABS. Similar to crawl control noise..

Startling at first, but once you know what it is, it’s nothing to worry about. Its perfectly normal.

Don't overcomplicate this it's not a mechanical problem. It is operator error. Don't let the truck roll backwards on hills with the transmission in any forward gear and you won't have any issues. If you're on a steep hill keep the left foot on the brake pedal while pressing the accelerator with the right foot. Release the brakes when the truck starts moving
