I agree. I've run Ultras many times. Best filter out there. But some people will never make it past the stigma

Mine was on so tight the inside socket was bending on that wrench. Luckly I had the 24 or what if ever the bolt was and it came off. Got a lot a flak from people on the forum for posting my trouble in removing the oil filter.

Now, I'm gonna make it known before the 10K mile service for the tech to use manual force as opposed to air tools to tighten...if the socket is too tight, air tools will (hopefully) loosen but not damage the threads.

Ayi-ya-yai! (Like Ricky Ricardo would say)

This makes it skeptical to trust the certified techs to do the small aspects of a job the right way.

I had Toyota do my 1st free oil and filter change at 4750 miles. Toyota recommends 5K intervals for more severe service. I don’t mistreat my truck or drive it super hard because I want to keep it for a couple decades. But I do have to drive up 5-6K ft. elevation 2-3 times/week for work, and even though I’m not driving it real hard, I still think that puts me somewhere in between regular and “severe” service.

So, I’m thinking about doing the oil and filter every 10K like normal, but maybe just doing a quick oil drain and fill at the 5K intervals in between, only because the filter is a minor PITA and makes the whole process about 3xs longer IME (I do all the service on my wife’s 2017 4Runner, so I’m familiar with changing the cartridge filters and while they’re not the end of the world, I’m not a big fan of them either). I figure at least I’d be getting a lot of the contaminants out with the oil at the 5K in betweeners... I dunno, maybe I should just do the oil and filter every 5K. Anyone else do this? Thoughts?

Yes, I had them do the 10K service at 4750. I got the work order receipt that states 10K service performed and lists the oil and filter in the parts section of it. I even signed a piece of paper saying I’m giving up my (worthless to me) 5K service.

I'll keep changing mine at about 7500 because of more extreme conditions. I reuse the waste oil to lube the pump shafts for the ag wells, so worth the small additional cost

So, I went to the dealership today. Spoke with the Service Manager and told him about the 5K mile courtesy service and how I requested the oil change.

He eventually printed out the service ticket and said, how can I help?

I told him I inspected the skid plate area and noticed the bolt that was forced in at an angle...I showed him the pic on my phone. Before I go further, I am under the impression I should have left it the way it was and have them fix it. I told him I was going to do the oil changes in between 10K mile increments and that removing the skid plate will require the bolts to be in good condition so they go back on the same way they came off.

The service manager called the tech in who was then asked if he knew the bolt was forced in at an angle. Of course the young tech (probably in his mid 20s) was trying to recollect his work and said the shroud made it difficult to see the bolt go in straight.

I also asked him if he used a torque gun to put the bolts back on and he confirmed it. I told him I had a heck of a time loosening those bolts because they were over-torqued--I showed him the pics of the semi-mashed threads. I suggested he be mindful of his technique and lower the torque speed so the threads aren't destroyed. Basically, I was counseling this young guy while the service manager seemed bothered that I mentioned his quality of work.

As I finished my soapbox session, the manager said..."on your next visit, mention the procedure you want done on your car" so this doesn't happen again."

I'm thinking to myself, this guy does not have the same quality expectations I have in part because of the non-genuine concern for the service I received.

As I was leaving I told the manager I still haven't answered my "Recent Service Experience" survey. He quickly asked that I forgive them for this experience and give them a good rating. Needless to say, I'm gonna think it over tonight and write up a response to get my point across in a professional manner. The rating is only based on the work and not the entire process of the appointment because of the genuine service the Service Reps gave me.

Needless to say, this will affect my decision to return to this location for the remainder of my maintenance agreement.

Factory filters have taken Toyota engines to 1,000,000 miles without an overhaul.

They are so resistant to changing it at 5k. The person on the phone and the person who I dropped it off to told me it wasn't included. I just got a call asking to call them in the morning to confirm I want it. Yes!!!! I'll pay the 60 bucks! Lol

Yeah, I'm gonna go to Easton, MD where I purchased my Sport...it's a 45 mile one-way trip but do-able through some scenic countryside between Delaware & Maryland.

I didn't get slack for wanting to pay for my first oil change. As a matter of fact, I went in for my appointment a day early but they were able to add me to the schedule.

My only complaint throughout the process was the workmanship on removing/reinstalling the skid plate. If the bolts cannot be put on properly without over-torque-ing and I point it out to be corrected in future oil changes, that feedback should be taken more seriously.

Inspect the work done before departing the service department. My only concern would be when I do my first oil change myself because that is when I will know if the drain plug, oil filter housing and skid plate bolts were over-torqued.

The military has known this for years. Worked on LCACs and the lubricant was never replaced. It was removed, filtered, new additives added and replaced. With the frequency that this happened and the price of that oil, it would have cost a small fortune just on that component alone. The oil would be sent off for analysis and in the 3 years I was assigned, we never changed the lubricant on any we maintained.

This quote right here tells you that you wasted your time. I've spoken to enough current and former Lube Techs to know that most of the time they are one step above the guy who empties the trash bins in the Service area; most are new Techs who are just cutting their teeth. Which is fine, at work we kick our Apprentices the shitty, brainless work too but where my new truck is concerned I'm more comfortable with my experience then some newbie Tech's, so I do anything not warranty or recall-related myself.

Yeah, I'm learning my lesson on this one. It was the "first" oil change too which I should have known better.

I told the Sales Rep from the dealership I bought my Sport from, the whole story. He said, come to us on the 10K scheduled maintenance (which includes the oil change) and we will take better care of you.

Koons Toyota is in Easton, Maryland...which is about 45 miles from my location in Dover, Delaware. It's a scenic drive going through farmlands and ranches. Sometimes I'll get to see horses being tended to by their owners and see them galloping around.

I'm from L.A. but live on the east coast since 2006 thanks to the USAF. This is a much more relaxed drive than say going from Alhambra to the Inland Empire...which is less than 40 miles.
