I have a 2007 Toyota Tacoma with the 1GREFE engine. V6. I am overhauling the engine and wondering since I have the upper oil pan off and the timing cover off which one I should reinstall first? Can I get away with installing the upper oil pan before I install the timing cover on the engine?
Anyone with experience doing these at the same time?

Timing cover first, then pan, but its not necessary.

Make sure that center chain sprocket is not loose, they fail. Also check all tensioners.

I did this job a few months ago. I did the timing cover first and then the pan. I also used regular Permatex black on the timing cover and pan. I used Aisin brand silicone for water pumps around the two water jackets.

When you say center chain sprocket are you referring to the sprocket attached to the crank or the variable timing sprocket? How do you check if it’s good/bad?

it’s hard to believe but my timing chain was tight, no play at all, and the tensioner has a lot of travel left in it. my motor has 356k.

The small gear that is above the crank pully, nearest the "V" valley.

Ah okay. Yes, that sprocket has some play in it. Is that an indication of needing replacement? It still spins however.
    Thanks Bishop84

The original 05 and 06's would have catastrophic failures from these,my whole shop will always recommend these when its all apart like you have.

I appreciate the feedback. Looks like these parts are only about 20 bucks and easy replacement, like you said, while I’m in here.
